1838 Seated Quarter Briggs 1A

I recently picked up a nice PQ 1838 seated quarter. Its been identified as a Briggs 1-A variety. Any info on the rarity factor of this variety would be appreciated.

  • 1838 Briggs 1-A covers some sub-varieties for the date. In other words, it's a "catch-all" for the date. Briggs lists only 2 varieties for 1838; 1-A and 2-B. The 2-B variety (closed claws) is extremely rare. The Briggs 1-A variety is very common. From Larry Briggs' book, here are the rarity ratings for 1-A (your variety):

    G/VG R.2
    F/VF R.3
    XF/AU R.4
    Unc. R.4

Thanks for the information. The coin is graded XF 40 by ANACS. It is deeply toned. Give me your email address and I will email you an image of the obverse. I still haven't figured out how to attach photos to these threads.
  • Can anyone provide a good photo example of those two types?
