Even the Taliban's Counterfeiting US Coins Now!!!

Well I guess this just proves how "Super Nova White Hot" the coin market is. Once the Taliban starts manufacturing coins the end is near.

7 -- 1846 Seated Liberty $ -- all from a market in Afghanistan -- what are the chances??

<< <i>You are bidding on a beautiful 1846 seated liberty dollar that I came upon during my deployment in Afghanistan at a local market. Look at the condition and bid with confidence on this piece of american history. >>

Hmmm...I'm not saying this guys a scammer, he might not know anything about coins but if it's too good to be true then well....

That's an obvious counterfeit. Those things seem to have infested eBay.

How can you tell that's a counterfeit?

Those counterfeits are made in Asia. By 1846, coins were struck on steam presses in collars. Somebody forgot to tell the counterfeiters this, take a close look at the denticles on that coin. They imitate a coin not struck in a collar.

I wonder if the seller wants to know that the coins are counterfeit?? image

Also, considering the seller has purchased two American flags during the last four months (his only eBay purchases), I'd say his story about being deployed in Afghanistan checks out.

I don't know.... That needle sharp strike combined with the "cooling tongs" pinch marks makes me think it might be genuine.

All 7 auctions appear to be the same pic in the auctions.

About 6 months ago there were a flood of 1845 and 1846 counterfeit seated dollars on German Ebay. Guy who initially brought the 150 or so to market told the tale of picking them up at a market in China. Every now and then they get listed and rarely sell for more than €5.

  • Just for kicks, I e-mailed him asking "If you came across this one coin in Afganistan, then how come you are selling it seven times (seven listings)?" -- Should be interesting to see if he even responds to my e-mail. Will keep you posted.

Nothing new here folks. There have always been crack counterfeiters (not the guys who made up that one) and a lot of them are in the Middle East (Lebanon has whole factories) and Asia. As our friends and loved ones start coming home from Iraq and Afganistan (hopefully, soon and in one piece), I imagine we will see the good, the bad and the ugly of these products. Fasten your seatbelts.
