question for you experts on old french coins

I've noticed that a lot of french coins (1600's-1700's vintage) that are supposedly made of copper,
tend to appear pretty brassy--- did old french copper coins have a lot of brass in them as well. F'rinstance,
I have a 1719-24 'John Law' French coin that appears VERY yellowy brass, yet what I read about them says
these are copper coins. Anybody have any information?

I know nothing about this, but I read in the Red Book that many French issues for the Colonies were unsuccessful due to their "brassy" nature. Perhaps France had a problem in general with brassy copper?

  • i do remember reading about a 1717 french colonial issue that was too "brassy" but that issue never
    reached circulation apparently.
