Big Price on Toned penny

Another big price on a Toned penny last night.
31 times Red on this 1987 S Proof 68. Is this the trend of the future for these great looking toners?

Looks more like a couple of guys got into "Have-to-have-it" mode, most of the other bids topped out far below the hammer price. Still strong interest in a coin I frankly don't find all that attractive - I think green copper makes me think 'corrosion' by default.

Of the ten I purchased, for the extended type set I am working on, only one really looked as good as the pictures. It is not that the coins did not have most of the colors that were presented but the photography and lighting for the new digital shots are really reaching for the colors. On one coin I bought that was “neon” the colors were there, but to bring them out you the photographer had to have used a defused black light, additionally most pictures you look at are blown way up. It is much harder to get a feel for these toners than it is a bright red copper or flush white silver coin.
The previous owner of this coin (local coin shop) told me that the person HE bought it from had stored the original proof set in MOTH BALLS! I do not know if that is true, but he really had no reason to lie since he sold me the cent at White sheet.
Anyway, I sent it to NGC, as I felt it was a solid NT in that it was not baked or chemically altered in the sense I have seen coin docs do on eBay. NGC agreed and there you have it.
Thanks
Doug
