Why have coin shows on Sundays

tmot99tmot99 Posts: 5,238 ✭✭✭
Ok, I went to the MidAmerica show today. Although I had a good day (bought a bunch of elongateds from Columbian Exposition) and a great seated half, about half of the dealers didn't bother to show up today.

Why do the shows continue to have hours on Sunday if the dealers are not going to be there? I did get in free, but still had to pay $11 for parking. Had I not found the elongateds that I was looking for, I would be pretty ticked off.

If half the dealers were there you were doing well! Usually there are only about 20% there on Sunday and they are gone by 1PM.
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • As long as you continue to show up......
You can fool man but you can't fool God! He knows why you do what you do!
  • The honest truth (this will probably make a few people mad at me) is that the coin shows are for the dealers to get together and fill their want lists. Sunday is their travel day to go back home.

Obviously, I am not referring to the REALLY BIG shows, but I believe it to be true for the small and medium sized shows.

It doesn't matter when the show ends, many of the dealers will not be there on the last day and most will be packed up and gone early that day. Those that have gotten rid of Sundays now have the dealers gone early on Saturday.

While more than half of the dealers left before the bourse opened on Sunday, I, like I usually do, stayed open till near the end. I started to (slowly) pack up at about 1 pm, and was out by 2:30 pm. And like usually, I had a good day with sales on Sunday.

For many of the dealers, the type of coins they sell typically are traded with the crowd that comes earlier in the show. While it is a bummer for those that can't get there until Sunday, before many of the coins have left the building, many dealers must feel there are not enough sales to stick around. As mentioned above, many dealers do use Sunday as a traveling day, and need to be back by Monday- both the fulltime, and part-time dealers.

  • I think this is one of those issues where we all agree that
it would be nice to know that dealers will be there for the
entire published hours so you can go to the show when it
is best suited to your schedule, but we can't do anything
    about it.
