What's hot & what's cold: 1970, 1971, 1972 & 1973 Topps Baseball?

I'm pretty much winding down my '69 Topps Baseball set - I still need the last and toughest 10%, and who knows how long it will be before I track down those cards, so in the mean time, I suppose it's time to get started on one or several of the remaining 4 Topps baseball sets I'm working on. I typically take a contrarian approach: I buy when the market it soft and stay away and even sometimes sell when the market is hot. So in other collectors opinions, which of these sets: 1970, 1971, 1972 & 1973 Topps Baseball are hot and which are cold? Also, I'm looking to buy PSA 9's in 1970, 1972 & 1973 Topps Baseball and PSA 8's in '71. I was actually buying these cards from 1999 through 2001 when PSA 9 commons in 1970, 1972 & 1973 Topps Baseball were typically selling for $25-$35 and then bailed out when some aggressive collectors came in and pushed the market to double, triple or even 4 times those previously mentioned prices. Thanks in advance.

Right now and probably for at least the remainder of the summer, you really can't go wrong by setting up $35 snipe bids on 1972 PSA 9's. The high series go for a bit more, but not much. I would bet that you can knock down between 10 and 15 per week at under that price - probably a little less if you avoid those not perfectly centered. I just counted 44 PSA 9's that closed on eBay for under that $35 going back to June 12th.
Sets - 1970, 1971 and 1972

Right now, it is a buyer's market for 1971 PSA 8s. It has been great because I have regularly been picking PSA 8s up for about 60 to 70% of SMR. I hadn't planned on upgrading some of my PSA 7s right now, but I couldn't resist at the prices I have been paying. For a while, PSA 8s were selling in the $15 to $18 range, but most are currently selling in the $10 to $13 range. PSA 9s and low pop cards are a different story. There are several high end collectors who seem to have very deep pockets that regularly bid the PSA 9s high. With regard to the low pop cards, there is currently at least 5 or 6 people at near 90% or higher who are all looking for the same low pop cards. Several of those collectors have started buying my PSA 7s in an effort to just complete their set :-(

i can see 72 topps psa 9's creeping up a bit more i know MACHODOC and FRANK READ are actively upgrading their 72 sets there is also the EO factor, if he needs a 72 i won't even bid on it, as he will NOT be denied. i plan to focus almost exclusively on psa 9's for my set. PSA 8's don't seem to float my boat like they used to.
i've noticed the drop in prices for 71 psa 8's as well. SANDIEGOWILL (good seller) on ebay has a ton of them for auction on ebay this week. most of my budget has been focused on 72's but i plan to gravitate towards 71's as i get closer to 100%.
the bargains i've seen on the 1970 front have made me consider pursuing that set in 8 and better but i already have a ton of raw that i would submit before getting aggressive on ebay but that's further down the road .
all in all, it's a buyers market so enjoy and good luck!
You don't really want any 1972 9's for a loooong while, right? I really wouldn't mess with them if I were you. I do know however, a really great source of cheap 8's!
1973's are dead right now, with almost no supply. I started out trying this set in 9's, but threw in the towel and will be happy to finish it out in 8's. Right now I'm at 83% and 8.30 GPA, but to tell the truth, I would let the whole thing (minus a few 9's) go if the right offer came around.

Machodoc -- I'm really surprised to read that '73s have dried up. I have about 25% of the set completed in 9 and another 5% in 8. As for '72's, I have the complete set (most raw and anything graded is on the registry). I can easily submit 200-300 that will grade 8, but I think over the long haul I'd like to have at least half, if not 3/4 of the set in 9.
i think you're headed in the wrong direction.
1966 psa 8s cant be beat at these levels.
place snipes for 12-15 bucks on any centered
non tilted 8s and you'll buy 1/4-1/3 of the set
for practically the cost of plastic.
Even to high for me sometimes.
SKINSFAN (art) -- The '67 Philly set is, in my opinion, one of the toughest sets of the '60s of any sport. The prices are strong right now and I hope that means more people will submit more cards for the open market. Incidently, at the Houston Tri-Star show I picked up a raw '67 Philly #1 Atlanta Falcons Team card. It's a borderline 7/8. I sure hope it goes 8 since that's one of the toughest in the set. It's a PSA right now, so hopefully I'll know something in about 2-3 weeks.
