Problem 1858 Flying Eagle

This particular coin has problems. I am using it as a hole filler in a small cent album.
Actually the coin hasn't sen a lot of use as it has excellent detail probably a nice XF grade coin, except for the rim dings maybe.
I have another better one, so since it had problems, I could experiment with it.
Anyway, the problem I was attempting to rectify was removing or minimizing the ugly black splotches on the coin.
The 1858 coin before cleaning was attempted.
After soaking the coin in olive oil for a month, the splotches weren't even touched. So I tried some trichlor solvent and it didn't do anything either.
So I then tried some Acetone, to no avail. I even tried a scraping it a bit with my findernail (notvery scientific there) to see ifthe big slotch would come off or loosen up some.
The coin after my cleaning attempts

Do you think some lemon juice like cleaner solution would work?
Or is there something that might be a better way to clean it?

Thanks
Earl

    Earl, welcome to the boards.
Your coin appears to have corrosion and will likely not improve with any method of cleaning. You've tried what most people consider the most effective method on copper coins.

    Earl,

Although I collect only mint state coins (at least for time being), I will say that your coin doesn't look that bad.

The rim ding is a little distracting, but over all I'd leave the coin as is.

  • Thanks everyone.
It's back into the hole in my son's album.
    Maybe in another 100 years....
