How do YOU interpret the Grey Sheet

The Grey Sheet shows one column for VG, FINE, VF, XF, and AU for Morgan Silver Dollars. Which numerical grade do you assign to each? In other words, for the AU, is it AU-50, AU-53, AU-55 or AU-58? Similar question for XF, VF, etc.

Edited to correct a typo.

I believe the general consensus is, that (in the absence of an indication to the contrary by/in the CDN) the prices are for the lower end of the various grade categories. For instance, "AU" generally corresponds to an AU50 example.
  • Slight correction... I meant XF, not EX.

If you are buying it represents the low end of the grade. If you are selling it represents the high end of the grade.image

Mark Feld is correct, AU is AU-50, XF is XF-40, VF is VF-20, F is F-12, G is G-04, et cetera.

  • Based on the responses, how do you guys calculate what an AU-53, AU-55 or AU-58 might be worth if you have a huge jump from AU-50 to MS-60? This question goes for the other grades (in particular the VF range).

I consider things such as the spread between the listed grade (AU, for instance) and the next grade (MS60), prices quoted and realized at shows for similar coins, the type of coin it is, how much tougher the coin might be in a slightly higher grade, auction sales histories, etc.

In many cases, the value difference can be negligible (VF 20 vs. VF 25, for instance) and in others, great (such as AU 50 vs. 58 for a Draped Bust Dollar).

I gave up on the Grey Sheet. Not enough info on grades in 66+.

If I had to complain about that problem with a Morgan Silver Dollar Collection, then I really wouldn't have a problem.

The point of the question resides in the VF and AU ranges primarily.

Interpret the Greysheet? Hell, I can't even FIND anything in the Greysheet, let alone interpret it! I hate the way it is laid out! I let my subscription lapse and have quit using it, until they come up with a more organized layout. I consider the subscription I paid for to have been a waste of money. I tried to use it, but it just irritated me too much.

Of course, the possibility exists that I'm just thickheaded.

LMV, I don't understand your comment. What is so hard about the greysheet? You open it up, and go directly to page 6, Morgan Dollars. image

Marks and others comments are exactly right as far as the spread. You really have to know what coins are being traded(bought/sold) for to know correct pricing. Simply using an interpolation method for in between grades is impossible as it varies not only from a specific coin series, but also from coin to coin in that sereis.

Another vehicle for dealers to rip those who sell coins (along with "Who's slab is it in? Don't look at the coin.") to them. According to this pricing guide, an AU 58 is worth the same as an AU50, since they don't differentiate. Do you really think they're gonna clue you in???

You can do better than that.
