OK, show me the back of the 71 so I'll know how jealous to get.

Hope you don't mind me going off on a slight tangent here. I recall a thread not too long ago where someone asked about the some of the date numerals on a Kennedy half looking stronger than the rest of the date. MadMarty's photos provide a perfect example of the answer I gave on that thread.

Notice on the 1968 and 1969 halves, the 8 and the 9 look stronger than the rest of the date. The galvanos for those halves would have had 196x (x being the missing numeral). The master die would have had the 8 and 9 engraved (or, on older coins, punched) on them. If the engraving (or punching) on the master die was a little deeper, that numeral would appear a little stronger on the coins.

Notice on the 1970 half, the 70 is a little stronger than the rest of the date. That galvano had 19xx for the date.

The 1972 half is the same as the 1968 and 1969, with the 2 looking stronger. That galvano would have had 197x for the date.

The 1971 half appears to be the only one where the engraving of the rest of the date onto the master die was not deeper than the rest of the date. That one looks pretty much uniform. image
  • Richbeat,

I hadn't noticed that until you mentioned it. Thanks for the info! image

Hey MM...Did you happen to see shineycoinboy there?
What is money, in reality, but dirty pieces of paper and metal upon which privilege is stamped?
