Interesting fact - 10,000 people get greysheet, 2,000 get blue sheet

Just thought you would like to know.

This is according to a phone call I had with them within the past year.

More people are willing to haggle over coins graded 65 and below!
HEAD TUCKED AND ROLLING ALONG ENJOYING THE VIEW! [Most people I know!]

NEVER LET HIPPO MOUTH OVERLOAD HUMMINGBIRD BUTT!!!

    WORK HARDER!!!!
Millions on WELFARE depend on you!
  • Or could it be more people can't afford most coins graded 66 and up.
  • I love it when I'm selling coins at a show and the dealer I'm trying to sell to, pulls out the Bluesheet to look up a price! I usually pull the greysheet out of my back pocket and point out that since I'm standing here with the coins, this would be a "sight seen deal".

Or the one I like the best is "oh that coins not listed in the greysheet, I"ll have to look it up in the bluesheet", give me a break.

Edited to add: I understand the Greysheet stops at 65. It really gets me when a dealer uses the bluesheet to try and lowball me with a sight unseen price price on a coin that I know is listed in the Greysheet.

You need to watch that kind of dealer.image

Ironically, a low-end sight unseen quality coin is STILL "unseen quality" even if you are seeing it. And in those cases the blue sheet still applies. Heck, some coins don't even bring blue sheet they are so conserved or fugly. To use the CDN one has to have a knowledgeable buyer and seller who know how to grade, and both who concur that the coin is of CDN quality.

Since most collectors buy quality coins (sight-seen) the blue sheet is of little use except to get a starting point for MS66 and higher coins.
The blue sheet used to represent reality in the certified coin market, but no longer. It is strictly a flea-market price guide for "grading mistakes" quality.

    exactly,

I subscribe to grey, but have absolutely no use for the blue. As a collector, I only buy sight-seen. I would never buy anything close to sheet levels with out being able to see what the coins look like.

There are lots of coins in the bluesheet that are not in the greysheet. MS 67 Mercury dimes for one. The greysheet only goes to 65.

I was offered a solidly graded and pretty NGC Morgan dollar by a major dealer a couple days ago for $1600. Seemed like a lot to me, so I looked it up. Greysheet was $2000, which surprised me, but Bluesheet was a more realistic $1000. I offered $1250 and bought it. What's the point? You can look at as many sheets as you like but a negotiated price is still going to vary from coin to coin and from person to person. If you understand that, you should also understand that every price guide can be of some use.

I am so with you. I'd rather they simply be honest and say:

I'm broke right now and would only flip it to Joe who I know would pay me split between blue and grey (, so why don't you offer it to him). Or

I know my offer won't be fair because _________________ or

I really don't care for your coin because I think it's unattractive (if he really believes that) but if you want what will be my low offer......

    or better yet

Hey that's a nice coin.....I can pay you a fair price (which would be much closer to grey than blue)
  • Hey that's a nice coin.....I can pay you a fair price

This is all I'm asking for when I'm selling a nice coin.

What about the 80% of the coins that aren't "nice"?

The biggest suprise to me is that Greysheet circulation is only 10K. Thats about 1 in every quarter million people in the USA. I live in county of 750,000 and I'd like to think that more than 3 people in the county subscribe to the Greysheet. Let me see...there's me, the dealer I go to that I see pull it out from behind the counter every weekend.....who's the other guy???image Seems really low to me.

Whoops. Did my math wrong. Those nasty decimals! 1 in every 25K. That sounds more like it. Now I have 30 guys in the county subscribing to the Greysheet. Still seems low, but at least I can fathom it.

In some ways it's too bad there aren't more collectors however more collectors means higher prices.

I live in a decent size town and there are several collectors here, but when I call CDN for a question, they ask for my zip code, and know exactly who I am. One time I asked them if I was the only purchaser of the cdn in this zip code and they said yes.
