20th Century Type Set

Hello Everyone!!!
I attended my first Charlotte Coin Club meeting last night and had a great time meeting other local collectors and exploring their interests. Several veteran collectors suggested that I start a type set as a way to expand my knowledge of coins in general and also discover other series that I may want to concentrate on in the future. Who is working on or has completed a type set and what advice would you give to someone just starting out? Which coins/ years would you suggest I include or avoid? To keep expense low I would use raw coins. What method of storage and display would you suggest? Any and all suggestions are appreciated!

Best regards,
Al Wilson

  • I think Capital Plastics makes a nice holder for a 20th Century Type Set.

I would agree with Louis. That's how I started, is by filling in this 20th century Set. I did mint state coins all first year issue (only exception is the SLQ Type 1, I used a 1917 rather than the 1916). I was very proud when I was finally completed with it. All coins are white.

Another great place to start is the US Type Set Dansco Book. It covers both 19th and 20th Century coins. It doesn't include all "varieties" such as all three types of 3cent silvers. However it has been a lot of fun putting this together. Somewhere along the way I changed from nice XF examples to MS examples of all coins. I am almost done upgrading everything.

Type sets are the best place to start until a particular series catches your fancy.
  • This should inspire you to start a Dansco album 1800 to date type set. It inspired me!

I've got a frame of "20th Century Type Coins" that I put together on my wall of my home office - it has a frame with 29 coins. A pretty easy set, but I am still "upgrading"it. I love it and it does give you a chance to learn certain nuances about certain series. It will eventually be all MS type coins. A great conversation piece at home when "non-collectors" come by.
