I've had nothing but good experiences with Joe. He handles very nice coins and I've found him to be honest and helpful. He is helping me assemble a Colonial currency typeset at the moment.
He was the guest coin expert on WCIU Ch 26 Chicago for a while, mostly after Walter Perschke left. He has his own business now in the Chicago suburbs. He knows classics pretty well.
Oh, wait. I guess you're not talkin' about Joe O'connor, the (former) Head Butler here.
You're talkin' about Joe O'Connor the rare coin guy. Yeah. I've heard of him.
From what brief look I had at his inventory listing somewhere, I'd guess that his material's a bit out of my league. Looked nice, though, as I remember.
<< <i>I believe that he has posted here on occasion with the username joconnor. >>
I just did a search of the archives and found joconnor in the infamous mile-long thread in which he and Adrian exchanged opinions about the other's manhood. That was entertaining.
Ignoring all of the insults, joconnor seemed to know what he was talking about. Then he stopped posting.
I have never purchased coins from Joe but have looked at his inventory and discussed coins with him . He has high end merchandice which looks as good in hand (and sometimes better) than in his pictures. Pricing of coins depend on their intrinsic value, the dealers business plan and marketing skills. As far as I can tell, Joe has a small but well heeled following and likes to develop long term relationships. He is direct and knowledgeable. On a personal level I like him. Several experienced collectors that know him well speak highly of him.
In all interactions with dealers, start slowly, judge each item carefully and follow your instincts.
Have bought from and recommend Joe. He has integrity, knowledge, great coins, and fair prices. I am 98% sure he was at Rarcoa Rare Coins before he went out on his own.

I haven't done business with him, but have heard enough good things that I wouldn't mind. He has some nice coins and pics on his website.
