King of Siam grades

Hi David,
I'd like to hear your comments on the PCGS regrades of the King of Siam set. As specific examples, the 1804 Bust Dollar was graded PCGS PR65 in 1990 and now is graded PR67 by PCGS; the 1834 cent was graded PR66BN in 1990 and now is in a PR66RB PCGS slab.

Do you think the coins were "curated" between then and now? If yes, how can dipping copper to give it some red be considered a "proper cleaning?" If no, why the upped grades?
Thanks for your time,
Barry

    Hi Barry,

When we first graded the King of Siam 1804 in 1990, we hadn't seen many 1804 dollars. Since that time we have graded a handful, including several PR65s, a PR64, and the incredible Childs PR68. We were by now in a position to mentally compare the 1804 dollars we have graded. The King of Siam was clearly better than the other PR65s, but not quite as nice as the Childs PR68. The PR67 grade is more appropriate, it's that nice.

As for the cent, I have no idea what we were thinking in 1990 as the coin is clearly RB.

    Thanks,

    David
