L & C disappointment

I was sitting at home today and my 2004 proof set and L & C unc coin arrived (haven't received the proof yet). I looked at the proof sets and am satisfied as usual, but the L & C unc coin is a disappointment, not with the coin itself, but in the packaging!

With all my previous commems, there was a much larger holder that didnt need plastic to hold it in place. Is the mint cutting corners or is this just for the unc coin?

  • this has been the standard packaging for the UNC coins for a few years now. It is rather cheap looking compared to the proof coin packaging. I believe that they could afford better packaging for the surcharges that they get on each coin.image

The mints packaging has gotten very cheep over the years. The first flight unc half came in a plasitc tray that has a space for the coin. No box inside the sleeve, just the plastic tray with the coin.

100 percent of the surcharges go to the designated beneficiary. The revenue to the Mint is less the entire surcharge.

Unless sales are off or they advertise too much etc, and the mint doesn't make their overhead expenses, in which case they take it out of the surcharges. In the case of the Jackie Robinson commems, between the legislative grab of the first million in surcharges for the Botanical Gardens, and the mint cost overruns, the Jackie Robinson Foundation got almost nothing.
