How is the best way to send PROOF coins to PCGS............?

I have in the past sent them in a small zip lock poly bag and then inserted them in a 2-1/2 x 2 1/2 Flip. I have heard that the poly wrap may disturb the proof finish? Any suggestions on how to send PR70 to PCGS for grading? Thanks in advance. Walt

Send proofs in a 2 1/2 X 2 1/2 mylar flip without the polybag or the proofs will haze.

  • Thank you as well .............. fivecents. I had heard that but wasn't sure. Don't the flips scratch alittle?

Not if you're careful when inserting the coin. If you're concerned, though, you can always put the coin in a 2x2 Intercept Shield holder then insert it in the flip.

Just be careful getting them past the opening of the flip. Also use only new flips. PCGS actually sent out fliers warning submitters againist mailing proofs in the polybags or polyvinil flips.

Five cents has it right - I have had no problems using new mylar flips per PCGS's instructions. No haze problems thus far.

I have not had any problems with creating any new hairlines - just be careful.

After paying the Bank of America $115 a year just to store my modern PR & MS sets, I wonder, could I just send in a group of sets, in their original holders, and let the grades fall where they may ? Do I actually have to crack the sets out, handle them into mylar flips, ( you know the drill ) ...

So, will PCGS accept complete sets in their original US Mint holders ???????

Yes, as long as you have every coin in the set graded.

I have had some proofs that appear to turn while waiting for grading. These proofs are from dealers that are selling opened proof sets. The Lincolns especially seem to be developing problems after packing for mailing into PCGS. I had one that graded Pr63 Cam on the 'your grades are available'. I was disappointed until the coin was returned and I agreed with the grade. The coin had developed serious spotting where little or none was evident prior to submitting. I can't tell if there was a fingerprint developed or what?

    Anyone had similar experience?

  • Will SafeFlips work? Is that what you're talking about? I have those nice new non-PVC saflips.

Yes. When I first started submitting I had many coins completely ruined because I was using crappy flips.

If you're talking about the brand name SAFEFLIPS from ET Kointainer, they are the best on the market.

ONE THING I'VE LEARNED, IS THAT IF YOU CRACK OUT COPPER COINS OUT OF MINT/PROOF SET HOLDERS, WEAR A SURGICAL MASK...YOUR BREATH CAN CAUSE SPOTS. KNOWING THAT THE GRADERS OF "ALL" TPG COMPANIES USE THESE MASKS AND WHITE LINEN GLOVES, GIVES ME THE REASSURANCE THAT NO SPOTS OR FINGERPRINTS EVER DEVELOP ON MY COINS !
