The 1960 Small over Large Date Proof Cent

Howdy!

Just wondering what the variety is worth in PCGS PR66... I thought the one in the charity auction (USC004) would be going higher... or am I thinking of a different variety?

Thanks,

Jeremy

  • Jeremy,
I think you're right. That one is pretty scarce. Someone is gonna get a great deal if the bidding doesn't go any higher.

  • One sold for $450 in May on eBay. That's a little more than I believe a nice one is worth. The 67RD is the big ticket item. Your auction item might be a bit over graded.

  • Most i've seen on eBay have been D mint coins. The one in Jeremys Charity auction is a Proof.

Anyone have any info on 1960 small over large date proofs ?

Frankly if I had the cash I would be bidding that up to about $250, but much more would be a stretch. Alas, I don't have the money to survive as it is and haven't bought anything at all in months, so I must pass.

Although these coins are very rare, there are 66 coins out there without the blotching that one has. I'm not sure I really like the color of it, although I do agree with the grade on a market grading basis.

My best guess as to why people aren't more excited about it is that it doesn't have accompanying microphotos showing the doubling. I can see the doubling on it because I know exactly what to look for - but prospective bidders may not have the knowledge of exactly where to look for the doubling. Perhaps a link to the page on coppercoins that shows microphotos of that die are in order - and you are welcome to do so.

You are correct that there is one Denver mint die out there that has similar doubling and an RPM to boot. They are much more common than the proof dies. There are three different similar proof doubled dies in all. I have information on all three of these dies on my site.

    1960P-1DO-003P
    1960P-1DO-004P

The one in Jeremy's auction is an example of 1960P-1DO-002P. If you look at my microphotos and study the zero of the date you can see the same doubling in Jeremy's photo.

I do believe I'll like CC's images to the item... now who wants to bid? image
