How much on Morgans

How much have you guys spent on your Morgan dollar collections, all together? The ones I own so far are in the ballpark of $600 and thats 10 coins.

When I was a bigger collector of Morgans, I spent probably around $3000 on them. But now I only have 2.
  • I just started and so far I'm at 210 bucks for 3 coins.

Well, I did buy this Morgan:

But then I sold it for a small profit.

Reminds me of one of my favorite expressions I hear occasionally...

"How did you do on that <fill in the blank> you sold?"

"I suppose I'll end up with a small, but useful, profit." image

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I've got a few hundred in them... I don't think I've purchased a white one, though...

In the neighborhood of $2k+ and I'm a secretary for goodness sakes.
    Prost!

Why step over the dollar to get to the cent? Because it's a 55DDO.
  • I have all of the ones on my web site (see link below), plus a handful that I will eventually sell.

One small, friendly piece of advice... If you are really serious about collecting Morgan Silver Dollars, you better stop thinking about the cost. A whole set in any grade you can come up with will not be cheap anymore.

Not too much, probably not in excess of one or two thousand dollars.

Still need the biggies: 89cc, 93s and 95.

Those will really stress my budget.

at one point I had about $12,000 in the set, and I was still short one coin. I've since sold the bulk of it.

  • Im thinking about keeping the ones I have and continuing the collection, without any worrys of the cost. I know theres three that are really expensive in all grades(these are the ones I consider stopers). But I started to give up on the collection because I thought I would never be able to afford it but recently realized that most collections, even easy ones take forever.

  • My Morgan date set in a Dansco album was about $1k. You can see it my sig link. The nice thing about a nicely matched circulated date set is you can spend very little. The dates that cost the most for attractive circulated examples are only 3 coins - the '93, '95, and a CC type.

Hey Scott Morgans are Great. You can collect them in lots of different ways. Not matter what you collect, always take your time about. Spend a little money on some good coin books. There are several on the Morgan series alone. The new one from Whitman is a good start if you want to really collect Morgans. Most of all, take your time. It's real easy to got at collecting coins hard, fast, and furious, but that's also a way to get burned out. You are a young man so I know how easy it is get distracted or bored with a collection. I'm not that young but not too old and I know how easily I can be distracted too. The books you can buy or check out from your local library are a good way to learn and pass the time when you aren't buying right now. If you aren't a member of the ANA consider joining. The subscription to the Numismatist is worth the price of joining. The ANA has a lot of resources for young collectors. You probably live close to a local club. They can help you become a better collector and better buyer.

    Edited to add...

To answer your original question approx $1000 so far. I haven't been colecting them that long.

I've only got 3 nice ones. 83CC in 64, 84CC toned GSA, 87 in 64. Nothing spectacular, but maybe $450. I want a proof Morgan for my type collection, that will be a bit more expensive.
