An Update on the Mysterious Check...

airplanenutairplanenut Posts: 22,149 ✭✭✭✭✭
After thinking the check could have been an anonymous donation to my charity auction, I decided to remove the old thread and keep the sender anonymous.

I did, though, send a copy of the check to my bank to have them look into it. The result? The check is a fraud--had I cashed it, the sender would have gotten my bank account number, and a copy of my signature.

The bank is now looking into it further.

  • WHEW !!! Good thing you didn't just go ahead and cash or deposit it.

Kudos to whomever suggested you wait and be cautious. image

I would bet it was someone that knew you were running a charitable auction. What a lowlife.

If the check is a fraud, it would have bounced and been returned to you. How would the writer get a copy of your signature and account number?

Are you sure about that? It would have cleared my bank, and then bounced at the second bank... I thought the sender would still get it back... either way, I wouldn't have gotten the money...

    Jeremy

PS- A few people suggested I not cash it... I was thinking it was weird and wanted the bank to look at it anyway... I did know, though, that no matter what, it would have gone into a secondary account...

Nope. The depositor gets it back.

Ok: revision of my post to the previous thread. Checks in the mail are good as long as you now where they came from.

Yup, you would get the check back. What did the bank say that makes them think it's a fake??

Smart move checking with the bank! What a low life...silly europeans!
  • Jeremy,

Yes, the guy could have gotten your account number and your bank information had his check cleared and been sent back to him in his statement. He could have also gotten a copy of your signature when you endorsed the check. When you deposit a check made payable to you the initial bank that encodes the check dollar amount (your bank) also stamps their name on the back of the check. A normal endorsement will have both your signature, and your account number that the check is being deposit to.

Back in my old collection days, it was not uncommon for me to send checks to people who we had judgements on just so I could get that information to serve garnishments on their accounts. Yeah, I know it was pretty underhanded but that was my job.

We are having lots of trouble with new scams coming out every day. If the low lifes that come up with these scams would put that energy to a legal lifestyle I'm convinced they could be rich.

Gotta be careful out there. Sounds like you know how to smell a rat.

I think they did something by running the routing number... if nothing else, it might not have led to an account that was for certified checks... they might have also talked to the issuing bank.

  • Jeremy,
We also have a book that will match routing numbers to the name on the front of the check. Using a different routing number will also send the check into never never land. You would not believe the number of different scams there are out there.
