1973 and 1974 Baseball checklists

From what I understand, the 1973 unnumbered blue checklists were only issued in high series rack packs while the 1974 unnumbered red checklists were distributed throughout the year. What I can't figure out is why they are not listed in the online SMR nor are they listed in the set composition for either year. Only 11 73's have been graded while 105 of the more common 74's have been graded. Does anyone have any insight into this?

  • Beckett has always listed these sets as inserts with seperate listings for as far back as I can tell. I assume based on that they would get their own registery listing as well such as the 69 deckles or decals, or the 74 traded, etc. An old Beckett mentions that the 74's were issued in packs with the regualr cards though it does not say what kind of packs. It makes no mention of distribution for the '73. I thought these were available as "send-in's" based on the wrapper side panels but don't remember for sure. Looks like potentially a doable certificate for under $200.

Wanted: Bell Brands FB and BB, Chiefs regionals especially those ugly milk cards, Coke caps, Topps and Fleer inserts and test issues from the 60's. 1981 FB Rack pack w/ Jan Stenerud on top.
  • Fuzz,

I definitely see the logic in counting them as an individual insert set akin to the 1969 deckles that you mentioned. In my mind, however, I've always considered them to be part of their respective sets. I'd be interested to hear from those that are building these sets to see whether or not they feel the checklists should included in the set composition.
  • The 1973 and 1974 special checklists were distributed in both the wax and cello packs (I have a 1973 wax pack with one showing through). I've gone both ways about whether or not the 1973's should be included in the basic set, but generally come down to believing that they should be a separate set.

I think however that there should be a 1974 master set to include the basic, traded, and the checklist series.

I almost never see these checklists available for sale graded, as the pop numbers attest, and the raw cards I see are always pretty ratty and not worth grading.

I agree with Machodoc about how the checklists should be treated. '76 Topps should also have a Master set encompassing the regular and traded sets.
