Home Trading Cards & Memorabilia Forum

My computer was down for a week!

No computer, no Ebay, no nothin online,

AND I LOVED IT!

It's nice to take time away and just do the simple things in life, well anyway, I'm thinking of getting out of cards altogether after this experience, and I would like to know everybodys reason why someone should stay in or get out. I'm kind of wavering here and maybe I just need some good advice. And I've tried selling my cards before, spent hours getting them ready and thinking about it, only to chicken out and keep them all. Let me know what you think.

If you can still afford it and you enjoy it, then stay in.

If you don't enjoy it anymore...then it's time to take a break, or get out.

I would just take a break and see how you feel. Maybe something will respark interest and you'll wish you had all that stuff you just sold. Pack it away in a closet for a while and don't look at it. Do you need the money? If not then leave the non-volatile stuff there for a while, chances are it will appreciate or at least stay the same in value. Sell off some of the "hot" stuff and speculate on the rest.

I just can't see getting out of a hobby if you really enjoy it. The only reason I would get out is if I was broke...that would suck. image
  • good advice! Could use the money but not broke! Thinking more about the time.

I probably should do that...it would be a nice break for my wallet. But, having computer access at work, and at home, pretty much negates that possibility.

I quit buying, to an extent... I've been trying to do a lot of trading the last few weeks. My contract is up on the 30th and I need to save some dough now. Trading allows me to change-up the look of my collection and in many cases, I get a trade in my favor. I've added a lot of neat stuff the last few weeks. If the money ever becomes an issue, that's what I look at doing. It takes a little longer, costs nothing and keeps you entertained and you won't spend all your time doing it.

    This is a great thread!
My wife just said to me tonite that she's not my best friend, they (collectibles, PSA boards etc.) are your best friend.
Well it makes ya think? First thing I did was make a date and take her to the movies!
By the way, on the spending, she kicked my ass when she saw the credit card bill and now I can't reach the computer for a while! Seriously, tho, I have been collecting a long time and sometimes I just take a break from it. I know, unless I needed the dough, if I sold off my stuff I would regret it very much.
2323, I hope it works out - I get a lot of joy out of collecting stuff and sharing my collection and thoughts with others. Everyone needs a vacation from something, even a hobby.

One thing about this hobby, even though we pour a lot of money into these little pieces of cardboard, you have something tangible to show for it. If things ever got that bad, I could sell my graded collection and get a lot of this money back (hopefully). Other friends of mine spend more money on other pursuits, and get far less in return (their money is gone, never to be seen again).

Good point. A few months back I talked about that concept. A friend of mine is a big golfer - that is his hobby - he puts out energy and money and in return has the experience of the game. No Tangible 'gifts' in return. If one collects something and just so happens to have a little value, that is gravy - I collect for a connection - not to monetary value but to the game - and if I needed money and could get a return, that's an added bonus but not the core reason I collect. If I truly wanted a return on investment, I think I could find better ways than collectibles.
    Just my take.

I have been thinking about trimming down, if not getting out altogether myself. I definitely don't have the $$$ for this hobby anymore with 2 kids, and my wife rags me alot also. I do spend alot of time with this sh*t. I would definitely hang on the boards, but the Ebay thing is getting out of hand. Cards go up, they come down, they go up, they crash down again. I might just keep my David Garrard cards and wait on him to bust into the hobby like Michael Vick, and I will keep my '01 Titanium Football rookies numbered/75. Everything else could go to be honest. I could then focus on more Garrards, and more Titanium rookies. Kinda corner the market. My collecting interests go across the 4 major sports, and it gets way too expensive. That's because I am a total sports junky, and if I see someone lighting it up in any sport, I rush to get in on their cards before everyone else.

I'm definitely leaning towards getting out soon. I'll never surrender my passion for sports though.

7 MVP awards, the single season HR record, career walks record, single season walks record, 700HR/500SB, and two batting titles near 40 years old. How can one argue that those aren't stats of the greatest to ever play the game??? All this and there is still more to come!!!! Bonds:2005 NL MVP. Or are you going to doubt him again?
