One thing I would like to see more of - comments about good articles....

in Coin World, Numismatic News, the ANA journal, etc.

There are so many publications that I suspect that many of us can't keep up. It would be beneficial if we together would occasionally (read 'more often') post comments about good articles we have seen.

Let's see what the responses are first, but I'd be only too happy to help start such threads. I get all three publications you mentioned. People will need to understand that because of copyright, it's not possible to reproduce entire articles, though.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

This month's "Numismatist" has a great article on counterfeit sovereigns.

They only left out any reference to diagnostics on most coins. They DID mention that some were thicker or purer, but the article would have been superb if they had printed some diagnostics on the DECEPTIVE ones.

Sovs are the most frequently counterfeited coins I believe.

So you want us to review articles for you, Adrian? Would you like us to highlight the important parts also? image

I agree. There are a lot of great articles out there. I always try to at least
high light those which pertain to moderns, but there are many equally good
ones I don't mention about other coins. For the main part these threads draw
little response but perhaps they are being read and people have little to add
to the discussion. I read most all of Askari's threads but rarely comment.

  • Great Idea!In the future if anyone read a great article and would start a new thread we could increase our body of knowledge. In the interest of TTTing this thread,I will post this one here

Check out June 21 Coin World.Page 36.Brad Karoleff article on strike.Talks about reason for weak rev strike on Cap bust halfs (E PLURIBUS UNIM).Nice one page article.

Made me look at my Large Cents and realize on coins with cuds, the strike is weak opposite cud.

One thing I did that has (and will) pay benefits is that I bought all of the back copies of the monthly summaries of the Greysheet. Many cool articles in there.

There's a good one in the new coinage Aug, '04 that deserves its own thread. Interesting perspective on clad.

and just what do you think the thread I started about the Teddy Roosevelt Commemmorative was all about?
