What is the "Britannia" symbol?

You know, the Liberty-lookin' chick holding the stick on the back of British coins. Who is she? And I have a Greek coin from the 1800's that has her on it, too. What gives?

I can't seem to find this info on the internet. Is it smoe kind of conspiracy?

    Britannia is to Enlgand what Liberty is to the US.

    Brittania did appear on some British colonial coins struck for the Greek Ionian Islands in the early to mid 1800's. Maybe you have one of those.
