Junk boxes

Would it be logical to dig through dealers junk and half off boxes and look for high end roosevelt dimes, to send in to get graded? Or would I be wasting my time?

    No.
    Yes.

Junk boxes are fun, but they're more for digging out varieties and hole fillers. You're just not going to find anything high grade unless the dealer was a little stoned when he was filling it.

  • You think capped half dimes would be lurking in there, or no?

So, if the air in the shop smell a bit "funny", and it's not BO, go straight to the junk box.image

Odds are you won't find anything worth putting in plastic. If you really want something slabbed, just buy it slabbed to begin with.

Wasn't the 1870-s half dime found in a junk box?? I think that would be worth slabbing, but that was in the 1970's- maybe junk boxes are now more junk.

There's a slim chance of finding proofs but uncs are unlikely. Look through the books.
The binders of 2X2's can have something in them. Some will be intentional, but there
are still a lot of dealers who just don't check later date coins for grade or variety. Also
ask if they have any others or rolls. Many dealers don't have any customers for this
stuff and would be happy to save it for you.

    Good luck.

They do but usually only VERY low grade or damaged pieces.

That was what the "story" was. But how many dealers do you know who stock their junk boxes with Mint State mid 19th century type coins? image

Hey, I find good stuff in junk boxes all the time.......one man's junk is another man's treasure! I've spent $16 slabbing coins I've dug out of a junk box and paid $1 for.......course I like low grade coins and there's plenty of them in junk boxes!

  • I was thinking maybe I could fill up my Mercury dime folder full of low graders out of junk boxes, excluding the 16-D, but they dont have a spot for it, its covered.

I've gotten about a half dozen really nice roosies this way. Several with nice toning. Several graded 66. But in the end, you don't make much money off of it.
