Gotta post something good about PCGS....

With all the controversy that is going on currently, we need some good news as well, so here it is...

I had a 1888 IHC that was graded as MS64RD that had started to turn a very nice purple color in the holder. I sent the coin in for a grade guarantee because I thought it should be graded RB instead of RD. Got a call from customer service today and they agree with my assesment of the coin. The solution:

1. Reholder the coin as RB
2. Return the newly holdered coin to me
3. Honor the guarantee and pay me the difference between a 64RD and a 64RB
4. Since the coin was downgraded, the submission fees will also be refunded

Also - I will give them kudos on the speed at which this was handled. This was all done in the span of 20 business days (received on May 26 and settled today)!!

The only sad thing about this whole deal is that the '88 is one of the hardest of the IHC's to find in RD and it will be a real nightmare to try and replace this coin image

Isn't there an option for them to find you a different coin in the original grade?

There may be Jeremy, but I wouldn't hold my breath trying to find one of these - there are less than 100 total graded in RD (and this was the last one that I saw and I bought it 3-4 years ago...)

PCGS was the start of a new revolution on the coin business where millions of people who were ripped off unmercifully by every type of lowlife in the sales world setting up shop as some sort of "coin expert investment "firm"

I always like the word "firm". Like it's a law firm or something.

Followed by NGC, these two "ideas" have made it possible for people everywhere to buy coins and at the very least have an established "baseline" in which to feel secure that if they were buying MS-65 coins, they weren't "getting" MS-60 coins or worse. These ideas have expanded this business beyond anyones wildest dreams.

I recently had a similar experience with PCGS on a coin that was changing in the holder. In this case it was a cameo proof Lincoln cent purchased 2 years ago from a well known auction house. After 2 years in the PCGS holder it became evident that the coin had some type of contamination on the portrait to enhance the cameo effect. This contamination was clearly ruining the coin and was not typical. I was very concerned as this was a coin that was worth four figures.

When I called PCGS customer service, I was advised to submit the coin for Presidential Review under the terms of the grading guarantee. I submitted the coin with the $15 fee and was surprised to get a very quick response offering to fully compensate my for my full out-of-pocket cost for the coin and its return to PCGS. Apparently, it was not feasible to curate or replace the coin as it was a very low pop piece. I received a check in the mail a week later. I called customer service upon receipt of the check and let them know that they had exceeded my expectations and that they had a customer for life - they were very cordial and felt they were just doing their job.

I have always wondered how many of the other third party grading services would have treated me if I had the same problem with one of their coins.

Hats off to PCGS - they stand behind their product.
