Lowest graded PCGS set?

So who is the collector here who is building the lowest graded PCGS set?

I may have a coin for him or her?
This is a 1974 D just clear enough to read, must have been a pocket piece.

Slab it (PCGS or NGC) and if it comes back VG08 or lower, I'll pay you $150.00 for it.

    Braddick,

If you're the one with the lowest graded set, we'd love to see a type set scan.

I have a low grade type set in the Registry, 1792-1964 inclusive at 60% complete.....average grade is 1.72 (between PO01 and FR02) and here's the link (all coins have pictures):

Unfortunately, it stops at 1964 (today) else I'd be very interested - but Braddick loves these old worn wonders too so it will have a good home with him!

  • Wow, don't think I've ever seen a St. Gaudens that low! image
  • Lowest graded set, kinda sounds like a waste of money, if you want though I got a 3cent silver that I can give you, that would probobly grade lower than the one you got, I can't even see the date on mine.

Love that pocket piece registry set. Way to go! There's something about a well-worn 200 year old coin. Imagine who carried it, imagine the stories it could tell of all the musty, sweaty, dark pockets, can, cash registers, imagine if Abe Lincoln or George Washington had the coin. Imagine if they could actually detect the DNA of every person who every touched the coin.

If he has fun with it how can it be a waste of money? Can't people understand that some of us buy coins simply because we enjoy them and we couldn't care less whether we ever get that money back out of them?

Wouldn't it be Worst of the Best?

No, Best of the Worst is accurate. The challenge is finding the Best of the Worst coins.....ideally a Poor-1 level coin that will grade at PCGS. There are lots of low grade coins BUT how many are "nice" enough (or the Best) to grade at PCGS.....so it is the Best of the Worst.

If you've ever looked at worn out old coins, you'll note many (most) have symptoms of cleaning, scratches, dings, bends, corrosion or other damages that prevent them being graded PLUS the coin must have an identifiable date and mint mark (if mint marks exist for that date......ie, an 1873 w arrows quarter won't grade if the grader can't determine if the coin is a "P", "CC", or "O" mint coin by looking at the reverse.

Just try to finf low grade trimes and 1/2 dimes in Fair-2 or Poor-1 that will grade....very tough. And try finding low grade $1 GOld coins that are worn.....or about ANY gold coin ($5 Liberty gold seems to be the easiest).

As far as making money, there's an "old" saying in the computer business "There's money to be made on the leading edge and money to be made on the trailing edge." To me, this means you make money selling pop-top coins (leading edge) but also on low grade coins to....the cheapest 1796 quarter one can buy in a PCGS holder (Poor-1) is still probably a $2000 coin.....or a 1793 Chain cent in PO01 is $1000.....most collectors can't afford these coins in higher grades due to cost so there's a demand for these "key" coins in ANY (ie. lower grades)....now common low grade coins ARE a losing proposition!

From my perspective, building a 1792-1964 type set is EXPENSIVE. The lower the grade, the cheaper the cost. ANd what better way to learn about all the US coin types than by building a Type set? Its fun finding all 48 silver Roosevelt dimes in Full Bands but I'm having alot more fun just looking for one Roosevelt, and one type-3 Trime, and one Flying Eagle cent etc.....

    To each, his own.

How do you find them slabbed? I assume you have to send them off for submission because There are no Po01's and only one Fr02 on ebay right now.

cdwegner, from what I can see, coin looks more like an AG03 to me....I would expect an FR02 to show less of the obverse legends and for the portrait to be less well defined. In my set I have a 1859 FR02 that I'm using for comparison. Shortly, I expect to add a 1867 to my set in PO01 (Home Made, of course!).

    CasonCityGold,

I love your set. Comments such as "Absolutely Overgraded!" and "Possible Downgrade Candidate" had me laughing.

By the way, I think the 1883-CC is accurately graded, but the 1882-CC is a lock P-01.

Colorfulcoins, you make some very good points. I went looking through my junk box of misc old coins that I've pulled from circulation over that last 30 years and you are absolutely right. Most of them, despite decades in circulation grade MUCH better than P-01 and the few that are AG-03 or worse have all kinds of problems (one is bent, three are severely corroded, and one has initials carved in it).

Suddenly I realize that putting such a low grade set together is as difficult (or more so) than putting together a MS65+ set of just about any series. And if you like the thrill of the hunt (my favorite part), then putting together a super-low grade set is just the ticket.

You've given me a whole new appreciation for these sets.
