Can this coin be real?

eBay Link

Up for auction is a 1994-P 5c Jefferson PCGS MS69FS with a pop of 3/0!!!

This is the year of the matte proof coins, of course, with a pop of 452/3.

Note that there are 2 67FS coins and 0 68FS coins also graded for this date.

Are these 3 coins simply mechanical errors that should be listed as SMS coins?

---------

Other tidbits:

1997-P Matte proof 69FS pop is 492/72
1997-P 69FS pop is 1/0, with 3 in 67FS and 0 68FS listed - another mechanical error?

Other than the 94-P and 97-P coins listed above, here are the other MS69 Jeffs (none are FS):

1939-D rev 40 MS69 pop 1/0, none are MS68
1940 MS69 pop 1/0, none are MS68
1968-S MS69 pop 1/0, none are MS68

Mechanical error would be easier to accept... image

  • Seems to me that if this is an actual MS coin it should be worth a bundle,
regardless of date, being one of only 4 graded as high in the entire series.

If it is a mislabled matte proof, then it's only worth $100 or so, just like
    the other 452 examples.
  • I always wonder about auctions that have really tiny, really crappy images that rely on the holder to sell the coin.

    hey Ken

i noticed this listing soon after it appeared and assumed it was a mislabeled SMS. when these first appeared they were holdered as Specimen until PCGS determined what to call them and settled on the SMS monikor. they occasionally appear in that state on eBay and seem to sell for a slight premium due to their novelty but also suffer because there's no guarantee that the steps are full since all i've seen were graded SP69 sans FS. those were in the old green insert slabs, this being a blue insert would lend credence to the mislabeling assumption.

also, as you noted about the rarity of the series in PCGS MS67FS++++++ this should be bidding at much higher levels. evidentally the seller miscalculated our savvy!!!imageimageimage my hunch is that my bid at slightly past $100 will lose to a higher buyer, but i'll be there to snipe if i can!!

I can't understand why everyone keeps saying it must be a mechanical error and suggesting it should be listed as a SMS piece. Look at the enlarged pictures. The coin he is selling does not look like a SMS coin. It lacks sharpness and the matte finish. It LOOKS like a business strike coin.

What is money, in reality, but dirty pieces of paper and metal upon which privilege is stamped?
