I need some expert gold help.....

One of my good friends gave me 4 gold coins to send into PCGS. Before I can do that, I need to know what the heck I have...image and the aprox. value of each. I have no idea about types/variations or other aspects of gold so any help would be great.

The first one is a 1909-S $20 Gold piece:

The second one is the smallest coin I've ever seen (smaller than a dime) An 1853 $1 gold coin:

Number 3 is a 1905 $5:

The last coin is $ 3 1855 Gold coin. This coin has a reflective surface, like it's been cleaned but more proof like...

Thanks.

I would just put $1,000 each down, that should cover the total.
  • 1909-S is a Saint Gaudens $20 double eagle. It looks very nice from what I can see.

1853 is a type 1 gold dollar. That is the most common year for the T1 gold dollar.

    1905 Liberty half eagle.

1855 $3 gold piece that does look polished.

    #1 ) $1500
    #2 ) $1000
    #3 ) $1000
    #4 ) $1500 ( or whatever you paid for it. It's coming back in a BB )

This will keep you at the $5000 return shipping level

  • What is the worth of the last coin if it's cleaned... did they any proofs that year?
  • PlacidPlacid Posts: 11,299 ✭✭✭
    Yes about 10 proofs.
Its worth about $750 as a au.
If its a proof about 15k.

If you are sending them all in a one time, go ANACS! PCGS can find more reasons not to grade questionable gold and copper than any body else! I think they may have been bitten more than a few times on the Guarantee!

From the pictures I suspect all have been cleaned even the saint. Can you post some bigger pictures of the saint? mike

The first word that comes to mind when I see cleaned $3s is "fake!"

  • Well, Here's what I have after looking at the Heritage archives to help determine grade....

    1909-s MS-64: $ 1,400
    1853 $1 Gold, AU-58: $ 225
    1905 Liberty Half, MS61: $525
    1855 $3 polished, scratched net VF20: $ 700 if it's real...

I think I'll send the top 3 to PCGS and the last one to ANACS........
