The "New" 100-Item eBay Watch List

What are your thoughts on eBay's increased Watch List? It used to have a limit of 30 items; now the limit is 100. I've noticed one thing in particular -- not as many early bids. Many people used to fill up their Watch List, and then they'd have to put token bids in just to get all the items they're interested in on their "My eBay" page. Now they can load up their Watch List without bidding. I'm also thinking that some bids get forgotten with this new 10-Item Watch List. What'cha think?

The part I like about it is that if you are selling it shows how many people have the item on their watch list. Hopefully the seller figures out that most people bid at the last few seconds and doesn't end the auction early.

You both make good points - as a seller, I can note that a certain amount of people have my auction on watch, which is heartening. But as Scott points out, I think the expanded watch list has created more uses for the list - not every auction stored on the watch list is being watched for the purpose of bidding. The expanded list affords me the opportunity to track sales of items I'm not necessarily interested in buying. And I know I sometimes DID place bids to get a track on lots when my old watch list was full, and I haven't done that for some time. Good for buyers, not so good for sellers. That being said, I'm actually surprised that eBay has done this, since, in the long run, it takes money out of their pockets.

Two recent auctions I had close....

    1928 Ty Cobb PSA 6 - 29 watchers = 2 snipes
    1961 Johnny Unitas PSA 9 - 24 watchers = 1 snipe

Quite disheartening as a seller to say the least.image

Currently collecting.....your guess is as good as mine.

Bernie - at least you provided useful data to a couple dozen collectors!image

  • Bernie -- Interesting stats. I've recently experienced the same thing -- Lots of watchers but fewer (it seemed) bidders than usual, or at least what I would have expected given past history. With fewer bidders (even if they really were just watching via a token bid) it makes it APPEAR that there is less interest in the item. The other point that was made is excellent also -- The appearance of lower interest, and consequently lower winning bids, takes money out of eBay's pocket. I wonder if they've thought of that.

I use the watch list (since you can keep stuff on there long after the auctions over) to
track trends in big money cards. For example if the last five Tom Seaver Rookies in PSA 8
all sold for less than $500, this would not be time to put one of mine up for auction too.

1967and 1973 Topps baseball wantlists (any condition) welcome. Once had the #14 ATF 1967 set. Yet another collector like skylaneflyer, gimel1 who made it to the completion of 1967 only to need the money more than the company of 609 close friends.
Looking for oddball Norm Cash and Cleon Jones stuff, and 1956 team cards
  • Another feature that has gone unmentioned is the ability to add notes. I prefer to manually snipe, and I like to add the amount of my snipe in my notes under the item so I don't forget.

  • Guys, the snipe program Auction Sentry allows you to keep hundreds and hundreds of auctions with their sale prices indefinitely.
