Bullion Eagles

Why don't too many people collect the bullion gold eagles from 86-to present or the platinum eagles?

  • I used to collect SAE's..but i found that the set eventually got VERY boring and sold them..and bought more morgansimage..i just don't like the uniform of all the coins..like everything except for the date and a few other rarities are all the same.........they're good from an investor's point of view..but i'd say to most collectors they get boring......
  • Well I got em too, but they weren't graded and they ended up toning really fast and really bad, so I wanna sell them.

If you don't like the toning, try storing them in airtights. I've been collecting as well and I still love the design.

To many and myself included these are just bullion coins worth only the metal content. mike

I can't afford a single platinum eagle, and from an investment standpoint the buy/sell spread is a joke.

    • Well I have a complete uncirculated set in Airtites.
But I don't know what good it would do to have them graded and slabbed.
It seems the best are all MS69's. Looking at the registry sets, it seems everyone has a MS69 rated set too.
If I spent the money to slab them all, then I best I could hope for would be the 232nd MS69 rated registered set.
But some or many of my coins would likely come out MS68 or worse even.
To me it is sort of a disappointing set to collect, if your wanting to slab and register them.
But they are really nice looking coins with the walking liberty on them.
So I'll keep them as is.

But it would be nice to have some sort of airtite folder or album to put them in for display purposes.
Is there anything like that around that isn't a Dansco album?

Too expensive. If I had the cash, I'd be all over proof platinum eagles. But I don't, so I'm not.
    • I have a set of unc ASEs in airtites and I like the set. I like big pieces of silver. I certainly would never get them graded, they aren't worth it and it is cheaper to buy them pregraded wth no hassle. I have thought that a set of 1/10 oz gold eagles would look nice in airtites. They are small and cute and fairly inexpensive. Anything larger than quarter eagles would be alot of money to tie up in a bullion item.

A complete single year set of silver, gold and platinum would also be nice to have as a bullion type set. But for me collecting them all by date would displace funds from other interests that are more appealing.

I have a full set of 1/10th GAE, and I have the key dates for the 1/4, 1/2, and 1 ounce GAE. I like them, but as stated above, it would be very costly to collect a full set of all of them.

I've never really been big on anything that even when it was first issued, you'd have to be a moron to spend. (most proofs, commeratives, bullion, etc.)

Give me coins that someone would have used to pay the rent!

I have a set going but just the plain old everyday, boring, easily to tone, silver ones (which are in airtights BTW).image The wife an I like 'em and there is no way I could afford to collect the gold or platinums ones.
