Anyone ever pop an $$$ mint set for one coin?

My dealer has a 1999-s proof set that has this dcam dime that has this unbelievably toned head that makes me salivate. It looks so surreal, I'm tempted to drop the $250 for the set just to pop the dime....am I crazy?
Prost!

Why step over the dollar to get to the cent? Because it's a 55DDO.

    TUMUSS,

I'd have had that set opened, the submission form filled out, and the coins ready to ship before the postman pulled out of the parking lot. image

How did that Washington grade? Now that's a nice 25! This dime I'm speaking of is toned only on the surface of the head and it's so deep with the surface reflecting back.
    Prost!

  • The 5-quarters along are going for $150-200 on ebay, so you could recoup alot of your expense if you only crack the 4-coin pack.

I had a pair of 1999-S Proof Sets straight from the Mint when issued and broke them all apart just so I could put the silver coins in an album. The copper and nickel coins went in to my change jar. I kind of wish I hadn't done that. image
  • Why is a 1999-s Proof Set worth $250???

When I returned to collecting in 2000, the 1995 proof sets sold for a huge premium. When I asked dealers why, I would hear rationalizations like "the Home Shopping Network needs these to meet demand".

I waited until this month to buy my 1995 proof set, well after the promotion ended.

The 1999 Silver Proof sets are currently promoted and bringing a huge premium. Even the clad 1999 proof sets are up. The conventional rationalization is that State Quarter collectors are buying these and breaking them up for registry set submissions.

My simplified take is that in almost any year, a five-year old proof set is hyped and can be obtained a few years later for much less. I learned the hard way in the 1970s when I tried to complete my Ike and Kennedy sets when the 1970-D half, 1973 PDS and 1974 PDS Ikes were hot items, available mostly from mint and proof sets.

I've been told the 99's were a low mintage issue. I just want that dime.
    Prost!
