His one feedback is for this very lot of cards--so it is a false feedback at that!

Add in the private auction--I wonder how much I should bid?
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

Private auction + seller with one transaction + feedback from a bidder with a feedback of 1 = scam. Sad that some neophyte will probably bid on this one.

Always looking for 1957 Topps BB in PSA 9!
  • This auction was up twice alredy but still is not sold so I'm relisting it once again and for the last time, if it's not sold now I'm not selling it again.

I guess the third time is the charm. image

I don't want to believe that this auction is legit... there are too many red flags. BUT, the scans are all from the same source (images match in size and resolution) plus he provides scans of the back of each card. Seems like he had these in his possession to scan. They are definitely not stolen. Also, the serial numbers on the 59 and the 64, I think, are almost in successive order. They are defintiely from the same submission lot. If he stole the scans, what are the chances of that?

I'm not bidding, but if this guy would agree to an in-person transaction, I would not hesitate to bid if I were in the market for nice Mantles.

  • Ask him to use escrow.com. there is no reason for him to disagree if he is legit. It's win-win for buyer and seller. There is a book value $33k worth of cards. Escrow.com costs $25, I think. Both parties agree. The buyer sends the funds to escrow.com. The seller sends the cards for the buyer's approval. If he agrees to buy, escrow.com sends the seller the buckeroos....if not the seller gets his cards back, and you get your money back...less the insurance policy cost of $25. Ask the guy. If he says no....that's a BIG clue.

I did that with a case of basketball in Canada that looked real fishy. The seller said no, and soon after that he was canned from eBay. I did a "contact information" search, and the guy had switched ID's in May; he would answer no E-mails, and the phone numbers he listed had a message saying he was away.
  • This came up before.

Check out his one positive feedback. It was for selling the same lot. Why would they leave positive feedback if they never received the cards??????????????????????

    Sham.
  • this is way to uncommon..if he was marshal fogel maybe..but lets be real what are the chances of a person having all those 9's out of nowhere..maybe I will regret it for the rest of my life passing up the opportunity to get these cards at well below smr, however what about what I would have to go thru to get my money back from some guy who fled with my money...I could be wrong but if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, it must be a duck
  • I E-mailed the dude about using escrow.com. No answer yet. I'll keep you posted.

This is way too good to be true - if they were raw and in lesser grade, I might believe he is in possession of the cards. But PSA 9's and no ebay experience? Something doesn't look right.
    And Hi stranger.

You would need to ask the guy in CON40's sig line to give you a hand. You might have to wait till his daughter's wedding date though.

  • It would be a problem. escrow.com is the only way to be safe. If the guy disagees..forget about it.
  • Here's another fishy one. 1986 Fleer Basketball Set

I E-mailed the seller, but I got a respose saying the seller isn't listed. There is another E-Mail address in the description, but so far no one has responded to that. No PayPal...just send the bucks.

Every so often we see PSA 9 Mantles and other big stars put out for sale by someone with no (genuine) eBay history and who writes and spells as though he's barely skating by in his 9th-grade English class.

I tell you, I think con artists are using kids to front their scams, more and more.

Not very smart to tell people up front that nobody was willing to pay $5,000 for your $30,000 worth of cards the first two times. Strike three and he tries something else ... this time his PSA 9 run of Willie Mays cards.

Hmmm. My 14 year old is very good at scanning, has no eBay history, and got C's and D's in English this year! He also recently asked if he could borrow $5,000 to buy some cocaine (I said no). I'd better go look at the serial numbers on my run of Mantle PSA 9s and see if they match up (I think I left them sitting on the coffee table next to my '63 Power Plus card and my '34 Batter Up Bill Walker). image
  • Here's the reply from the Mantle card seller to my request to use escrow.com.

"The thing is I can't release those cards without
money, some of them are not mine and I had a deal with
the guy that I don't send it without money."

"Some of them are not mine." See, he's not a total liar.

Man, if this is a legit auction (I am really scratching my head on that one) then these two knuckleheads are clueless and deserve to be taken to the cleaners. Why not auction individuallly? Or consign to an auction house? I really wished I lived closer to them. I'd go and see these cards for myself. If it is legit, you could buy the lot, flip two over to cover your cost, and sit on the rest of the PSA 9 Mantles for your troubles!

Whaddya think out there? Is this a legitimate auction? I keep going back and forth on it.
  • jrdolanjrdolan Posts: 2,549 ✭✭
Offer to exchange money for cards in person, your trouble and expense. No legitimate seller could say no to that. For me, this looks way too fishy to invest $5K on a big payoff.

Scarce high demand cards at 1/7 of SMR; private auction; from brand new user; sole feedback is from "buyer" satisfied with this exact lot; unwilling to use escrow - how many more flags need there be? Pigs may one day fly, but I'm not betting my money on it.

If this is a need-quick-cash deal, wouldn't anyone front 5 grand with these cards as collateral? Step away from the keyboard, this one's ticking....there is no rational explanation for the existence of this auction, except as a ripoff.
