What full set are you working on?

Just interested in what you guys are collecting full sets of now. Do you have any trouble with certain dates, grades, ect. ? How difficult would you say your collection is to complete? How much its cost you? How much time have you spent on it? It doesnt matter if its not complete, or if you havent even started yet, I just wanna hear what you guys are working on and if you've had any luck with it.

I'm happily building a US type set... I can just add as I go along, and each piece is different, and I can like each coin for a different reason. I really like this way of collecting image

I'm working on 4 different sets right now. 20th Cent. Type set (circulation strikes, no varieties or gold), Peace Dollar Set (circulation strikes), Jefferson War Nickel Set, $5 Gold Eagle Proof Set. They are are relatively easy to complete in the grades I want and although they aren't cheap they aren't going to cost an arm and a leg either. The next set I will be doing is Capped Bust Half Dimes and then Silver Three Cents.

Working on a Barber Half Dollar set in AU 55 - 58. Down to eight coins if you don't count the 1892-Micro O.

Spent countless hours looking. Expect to spend as many hours trying to locate the missing eight coins.

  • A Lincoln Memorial Set, it's odd that the coins you would think would be easy to find aren't and the easyones are hard to find.
A IKE variety set, just looking for a 1972 type 2 to complete it. I might go with a raw one and take a chance on a slab submission. Especially since they offer a free submission if your over 90% complete.
A Flying Eagle Cent set, waiting on some slab submissions to return to see how I did. Obviously it is not likely I'll complete this one though.
I have some Large cents, might make for a starter set there too.
I did start a Morgan Dollar collection. Of course another doubtful to complete set. But one never knows. Waitng on some more coins to return from slabbing to see how it went.

  • I've got a set of Morgans (less the 95-P) and Walkers....now working to upgrade a few problems and less desirables.

I have a set of Wheatie Lincolns except for the 22 no D

Also trying a nice circ set of Liberty nickels...VF or better except for the 85, 86, and 12-S...that set is a bear !!

Oh man, this has a long answer, at least in my case.

Morgan dollars - still need 8 for a complete set, will need to upgrade 6 others for MS
Peace dollars - complete, but need to upgrade a few of my later twenties and the 34S
Ike Dollars - Always looking for improvements to my set
Frankie halfs, both PROOF and MS, always looking for upgrades
Kennedy Halfs - just keeping current, still need a MS 67 to replace an AU
Barber (dime, quarter, halfs) complete on all, always looking for upgrades
    Roosie dimes, just keeping current
Jeff nickels - need many date/MMs
Indian cents - looking to upgrade some of my 60s and 70s.
Two cent, 3 cent silver and nickel pieces
    Shield nickels
    V nickels

Full type set from the Library of Coins.

I think this should take me through the 22 century to complete.

Bust Dimes 1796-1837, Draped Bust mostly F (thought my 1805 and 1807 are VF30), Capped Bust mostly XF (some better, some worse). Need about 10 more.

It's so nice collecting circulated coins. No crackout games, astronomical price breaks for 1 point differences, etc.

For me I'm working on Lincoln Cents and all other coins from 1934. I've really been focusing on Jefferson Nickels lately too. I want to focus on clad quarters but have problems finding any that I like! For Lincoln Memorials some of the S's and early 60'd D's are very very tough. Nickels it seems some dates like 55-p and 58-p just don't exist nice. Nickels from the 90's are tough too. I hope to have Lincolns done within a year or so, and then I can really switch focus to Indian Cents and Nickels. It will be a long time before I'm finished with the clad coins. The silvers 1934-1964 are much easier to find, just need to spend the money, but I'm waiting mostly on them to use the money elsewhere.

A Dansco set of large cents with some varieties in affordable, but nice-to-look-at-grades.

After that, half cents, same way.

    Then quarter cents . . .

  • Im working on MS-65 or better rooseveltt dimes PCGS only, have lots to go on that. Im also working on capped bust half dimes, only need about 8 or 9 more. Im thinking about buying an album for jeffersons, and filling that up, with mint state examples, with all the proofs also, probably dansco. If I ever get enough money, I would love to start a 3 cent silver collection.

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who's working on multiple sets at once... Right now I'm working on a (probably) never-to-be-completed MS morgan set, proof cameo franklin set, nicely-toned upper circulated grade bust half set, proof set set, and ASE set, and a basic type gold set. I'm working on my basic Barber Dime and Half Dollar sets (1 dime set complete Fine - BU, one dime set complete G- AU, 1 half dollar set complete AG-XF, but looking for consistency). I keep getting distracted with a basic gold type set necessary for my 1800 to present Dansco Type set album (which is otherwise complete), a no-problem FR-2 type set, and a few wacko early commemoratives.

Completed sets include Mercury Dimes, Franklin Halves, Washington Quarters (1932-64). Walking Liberty Halves, Jefferson Nickels (through 1974), and Ike Dollars, but there's always plenty of room for improvement here if Barbers ever bore me.

Trying to finish my toned Peace $ registry set. Only 2 more to go (1928 & 1934-S) and a couple of upgrades (25-S, 27, 27-S, 34-D)

I also doing a NGC 20th Century Type Set, Proof Only - still need the Barber Dime, Quarter, Half, a Morgan proof and the 3 Buffalo Nickel proofs. A 09-VDB proof is part of the set, but I doubt I'll be able to get one anytime soon.

I'm also working on a Dansco Type Set. Just need the No Motto Seated to finish the non-gold. So I decided to do the gold page as well. Need everything except for the Indian $2.50. That one's going to take awhile.

    I'm also finishing a Wayte Raymond Peace $ set AU-BU. Still need the 28, 34, 34-S, 35-S.

And I was going to do a WR Type Set -- but that's just too dang hard and expensive.

I bought a WLH Short Set Dansco Album which I think will be my next project.

I usually like to have 1-2 sets that are high end registry sets and do some reasonable raw sets while I wait for the registry coins to come around. It gives me something to do at the smaller shows.

Many of my sets have no clear point at which they can be said to be full so will list
only those which have a "fixed" definition.

Circ clad quarters (w/v) low grade
Circ clad quarters (w/v) right side up
Circ clad quarters (w/v) up-side down
Gem eagle reverse clad quarters (w/v)
    Circ clad dimes (w/v)

    Gem Ikes
    Gem Kennedys
    Gem nickels (1965- date)
    Gem cents (1965- date)
    Gem SBA's (w/v)
    British Pennys (1860-1970)
    Gem Swiss Francs (cu/ni)
    Unc NZ shillings (all)
    Gem Japan 100Y (cu/ni)
    US Tax tokens (w/v)
    Telephone tokens(w/v)

These last may not be sufficiently well-defined to qualify since I've already found several
    tokens which are unlisted.

    Here's what I'm working on:

    Clipped Lincoln Cents 1909-2004 (223 down, 21 to go);
    Off-center clad Roosevelt Dimes (50 down, 27 to go);
Clipped U.S. type 1800-date (no idea where I stand, I need to come up with a checklist).

I think it's pretty cool that I'm the 37th reply to this thread and I came up with three sets no other poster is working on. More coins for me, then! image

  • U.S. Type Set (Dansco album) in circulated grades and a few MS grades for the more affordable coins. I'm about half way finished. I'm going to slow down and really look for some nice early copper large cents. I don't want any album-fillers, so the large cents and seated dollars will take some time.

This is a great set to work on for any one looking for a new challenge. I finished a Morgan date set prior to this one, and frankly I'm having more fun with the type set.

  • I have three sets going on now, all circulated sets:

US Type set 1800 - current. Dansco album, including the "gold" insert. About 60% complete. Technically I have more, but since I originally bought slabbed MS coins for my type set, I don't want to crack them out and place them in the folder, so I'll just start over.

Lincoln Wheat Cent - About 95% complete. Only a couple of common dates and most keys still to go.

Walking Liberty Half - Only about 20% complete. All dates and mint marks are readily available so it's just a matter of saving up my money and finding a good deal.

<< <i>Do you have any trouble with certain dates, grades, ect. ? How difficult would you say your collection is to complete? How much its cost you? How much time have you spent on it? >>

I'm trying to finish a MS63 or better set of Buffalo nickels.

Very difficult to complete. Some coins are easy to find while others seem to be FAR rarer than their published populations. I've only seen a single MS63 1926-S up for auction in the last 3 years.

Cost? After all is said and done, I probably would have been able to purchase a condo instead.

I've spent 3 years so far and ahve given myself 10 years total to complete this project.
