This site MLB All-Star Games will give you the entire rosters for the games in question. I looked at the 1970's games you mentioned, but it only listed the entire roster and indicated which of those did not enter the game--but it Did NOT give the starting lineups.

Maybe if you are familiar with those games due to your research, you can look at the rosters, eliminate the players who did not enter the game, then eliminate the other position players, and by process of elimination you can get at least some of the answers you need.

You may also search for any box score records on the net--as they may indicate who the starters were.
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

The '79 AL All-Star SS was indeed Freddie Patek, but for whatever reason, Topps decided not to mention that on his card. I still get that question through my website from time to time.

Retrosheet has a huge collection of box scores, not sure if they are a .com or .org . Chances are they'd have the all star game boxes.
