Hey, I just found a picture of my 17-s Lincoln Cent!

I bought it from a Heritage direct sale last summer. Thought the scan had been long gone. I hadn't looked under MyCollection on their website in a really long time, but just did, and found the 17-s listed with the scan and everything! Can add the pic to my registry set now too. Color looks a lot more even in person. It is my second favorite coin in my collection after my 1919-s Lincoln.

I know that coin. Would you like to know it's history?

    Wow, yeah, that is interesting.

That coin was found in a small hoard, stashed in a mason jar in a wall. The jar was discovered in a house on 40th Street in San Diego after it was condemned to make room for the Interstate 15 expansion. There were many 1917-S Walkers in that jar, both obverse and reverse mintmarks, the highest grading MS65 at PCGS. Unfortunately, no 18/17-S SLQ's and no 09-S VDBs, but there were a lot of choice teen coins in the quart jar.

Wow! I can't believe I posted a pic of a coin, and learned that much about it! Holy cow! Everything down to the street. How did you know this?

I belonged to a group of metal detector enthusiasts in San Diego, and was one of the few in the group who had knowledge of coins. I helped the finder of the hoard get the coins submitted through a dealer in San Diego. That 17-S I remember because of the discoloration below AMERICA, A lot of the coins in that jar had some slight spotting, and unfortunately many were subsequently dipped or played with. I'm happy to see one that wasn't.

Wow, neat. Thank you by the way! Very interesting.

You're welcome. By the way, is that coin in a green label PCGS holder, or is it in a newer blue label holder?

It's in a new blue label holder.

This is a wierd night...When I added the pic to my registry set, right around 3:00 a.m. the pop was still listed 47/15. I was just looking at my set again, now 3:15 a.m. and the pop changed to 48/15! Are the graders working the night shift or something! And the pop has only changed by 1 other coin in like 1.5 years, and now it changes just as we were talking about a 17-s! Gosh!!

I almost hate to ask this, but what is the grade on the blue holder? It got 63RB when it was first submitted.
  • haletjhaletj Posts: 2,192
It's 64rd. I believe the grade to be totally correct. There isn't any brown.

We disagreed with the 63RB grade, but sold everything as it was graded by PCGS at the time. Thinking back, I think 64RD is reasonable. I don't know why it got the RB the first time around. Then again, I'm not a Lincoln or copper expert so you have to take my opinions on small cents with a grain of salt.

Wow, some more Lincolns were made including an ms65rd 1919-s. That's the first time I've seen the 65rd pop change on a late teen S. Looks like 2 more 64rd 19-s's, another 64rd 16-s, another 64rd 17-d...
  • haletjhaletj Posts: 2,192
Well, that is pretty ridiculous if it is indeed the same coin. 63rb is like a $100-$200 coin I think, 64rd's are $1500 minimum, some as much as $3000. That is quite a big difference.

    Welcome to gradeflation. image

Gosh. I was thinking this was one of the nicest 64rd 17-s's out there too. Maybe with some gradeflation it could make 65rd someday. Before buying it I checked all of the 64rd's in the Heritage/teletrade archives etc. Almost all had terrible strikes or obvious browning. I had got one once before on ebay too that I returned because it was so bad. What a tough date!

  • Cool thread. That what these boards are about, bringing collectors together to share info!
  • Definately cool story!
