Question about the free 90% registry grading?

I'm not sure if this has been asked before, but what do you do when your set can't be 90% complete? In my 1967 SMS registry set, there are a total of 5 coins. If I have 4 of the 5 coins registered, the total comes to 80% complete. According to the PCGS registry benefits page, "If the set composition is 1-9 coins you are entitled to 1 free grading". So can I have my 5th coin graded for free, or am I out of luck because my set will only be 80% complete?

The reason I ask is because I've found this Jefferson Nickel in an NGC MS68 Cameo holder that looks very cool. As the seller claimed, the cheek is clean and free from any marks. The only thing that could possibly keep this coin out of a PCGS MS68 Cameo holder is a small contact mark on the reverse in one of the pillars. Since PCGS has only graded 4 of these coins in this grade, I'm skeptical if it will cross. I don't want it in a PCGS MS67 holder because I think it has more market value in its current holder if I should ever choose to sell. So, what it comes down to is that I would like to try to cross it to PCGS, but it would be a sweeter rejection if it didn't cross, on their dime. What do you think?

    Sorry, you're out of luck.
I asked the same question to PCGS about my SBA Proof set & was told this was set up for larger collections.

Once you complete your collection you get 1 free grading. Maybe buy a low grade PCGS coin to finish the set & then submit that coin with a cross ONLY if it crosses at the same grade.

Thanks Ajia. I hadn't even considered buying (or making image ) a lower grade coin to boost my percentage. These coins seem to be hot right now and it would be easy to resell while still making it beneficial for the free grading. Sounds like a plan. . . image

That's what I was going to say.

Also, I'm 90% done with my lincoln set, and I dont have free gradings...
of coarse, my having 15% in NGC coins might have something to do with that...

    nolimitz,

Yes, AFTER your set reaches 90% or above, which, if you complete a set it's definitely over 90% you get free grading depending on how big the set is.

For info on this & other benefits, go to the REGISTRY link & click on 'BENEFITS' on the upper menu.

i'm in the process of getting my 3 free gradings for reaching the 90% mark (Lincoln Cents Proofs 59'-Current Basic Set). Can't beat free gradings! Does anyone know if you get a free grading when you reach 100% complete??????

  • I got four free gradings for my two IKE sets.
The only catch is, the gradings have to be used for the sets you get them for.
Thus if you get 2 free gradings for, say your IKE collection, then you have to present two IKE's for the free gradings.
