1989 Upper Deck Box Question

Purchased 1 pack of 87 Fleer for $4 today and pulled a Bonds! Purchased 1 pack of 89 UD Baseball and pulled a Griffey! I felt bad, so I traded the guy some cards for the rest of both boxes. (10 packs of Fleer) and a whole box of UD. My question is, should I bust the rest of the 89 UD box or just hang on to it? I already busted the rest of the fleer box and got NADA! Now I have 35 packs of UD and I don't know if I should bust it or hang on to it. I do know 1 Griffey is out of it already cuz I pulled it and it was a brand new box. BTW, it's a high# box. I got it "cheap" enough that I can rip the rest of it and not feel bad. I guess my question in hanging on to it lies in the possibility there are other Griffeys in the box. Anyone have any experience with these? Do they usually hold more than 1? If so I won't feel bad about selling them right now. If not I'll keep or rip... I would like to hear your opinions.

Oh yeah, and in response to another post asking about the boxes being sealed...mine had shrink wrap on it...

Was the shrink wrap plain or did it have UD logos on it?
What was the condition of the Griffey you pulled?
A friend of mine down in Augusta Ga bought a box of Hi back in 92 and got 2 Griffeys out of it. But that does not speak of the hi numbers as a whole, just his one time experience. As we know from the discussion on the hi# case sold on ebay - the Griffs seem to fall 1 per every two boxes I believe.
Now using the 'case card' scenerio that has been talked about with respect to dealers on the boards, I'm pretty sure I know what people will say about selling of the rest of the box.

I just ripped open a high series box of 89 Upper Deck on Thursday. All but 3 packs had a star rookie in it. I got one Griffey (the second to last pack), 1 Johnson, 2 Sheffield, etc. If most high series boxes are packed like this, there will be some duplicates of the star rookies. The question is, how lucky are you feeling?

My box was shrinkwrapped by the seller (BBCExchange), since it had his business card under the wrap.

i had the post regarding the shrink wrapping. i've pulled multiple griffey's from low #, but never hi. i opened 4 boxes from the case i sold and they yielded only 2 griffeys from the 4 boxes. someone had mentioned what position the griffey's were supposed to be in the box if purchased, but i only pulled 2 from 4 boxes.

fyi - the 89 upper deck boxes (hi and low) do not come shrinkwrapped from the factory (confirmed by bbckid and bbcexchange).

good luck. i have been able to sell the single packs for $2 each on ebay. (high number packs).

    Thanks,

I also have pulled 2 Griffey's from 1 box, but I don't remember which series it was. I might have to reacquaint myself with a few of these boxes, now that the Griff card is hot again...

Hey Stone, I kinda figured what people would say about selling the box too and I realized I left myself open to some potential flaming for even asking, but I felt better asking the board their opinion just in case. image

Like I said before, the only reason I even bought the whole box was because I pulled the Griffey on the first pack and a Bonds on the first pack in the other box, there were two Bonds that came out of that box. Also, the Griffey is really nice, sans the flat spot on the hologram on the back which will probably knock it down to an 8 unfortunately. The centering is pretty good (56/44 LR & 53/47 TB)

If I remember correctly, there was no UD Logo on the shrink wrap. I didn't know if it made a difference being high# or not thats why I stated I had the shrink wrap.

I think I'll open the rest of the box. I can stand pulling a Big Unit RC or 2... Maybe I'll get lucky. This was the first Griffey I've pulled out of a pack so it was fun. It was really fun pulling the Bonds too. The Bonds is about 75/25TB though. image I never saw the other one. Mine came out about 4 cards behind the Will Clark, I guess thats standard collation on those fleer boxes...?

I'll let everyone know what I pull.

Ok, just finished opening the box...now I'm gonna be late for work... image

    2 Sheffields
Both Nolan Ryans (Very Cool Cards) Triple Exposure and the Football
    2 Smoltz
    1 Randy Johnson

No more Griffeys. But I did get 1 so that's good!

I pulled a couple Ripken, McGwire, Clemens and Maddux cards too...Good box I think.
