MrsSpud's New Merc - Grade Opinions?

MrSpudMrSpud Posts: 4,499 ✭✭✭
Hi,
Attached are pics of my wifes new Merc. I think she picked out a nice one here. Anybody care to give an opinion on what it would grade as? Also, what do you think about the almost Halo like flat circle around Liberty's head? It was hard to capture with the camera, but you should be able to see what I am referring to. When the coin is viewed at an angle, the flat circle around the head looks prooflike. Not the entire field, just the circle around the head. I've never seen this before. MrsSpud is busy today preparing for her dissertation defense (which is 10 days from now) so I am posting this for her. Thanks, in advance, for any replies and also, thanks for looking.

66FB shot 67FB depending upon luster.
  • I concur with MS65FB, the reverse is beautiful, but the coin loses lots of eye appeal on that brown streaking on the front.

Wow, I guess it is worth slabbing then.

You all are being too harsh on the obverse. I see these toning patterns in 66 and 67 holders all the time. Of course, all bets are off is the luster isn't there.

The flat area you mention in caused by excessive die polishing, a negative when it comes to Merc's. The brownish toning on the obverse is not attractive. I'm going to say it would no better than MS65FB. It is possible it won't make even that.

The coin has lots of luster, on both sides. However, my camera skills are a bit lackluster. I'm a bit concerned with the flat halo thing though.

I would concur with the MS65FB crowd. It is always hard to tell from a scan, but that is an internet guess.

I'm going to be the default poster here. Here are the pics of the coin.

I would say MS65 FB with those pictures. I would need to see her in person to give any better grade. The obverse doesn't look very pleasing to me.

Spud man - looks like a super nice 66FB who knows maybe better - very hard to tell - eye appeal counts big time - if your merc has great skin and lustre you can easily lodge a 67FB.

I say regardless - hold on to Mrs Spud image

In with the 65 crowd. Might go 66 with that tone pattern but I think the dings on the axe and what appears to be a ding behind her ear will keep this at 65. FB looks good.
