GAI vs. PSA - The Board's Opinion

I am contemplating buying my first GAI graded card. My collection thus far features only PSA graded cards. If I do buy the card, I'm not sure I'd try to cross it, I'm just wondering if a GAI 9 is more or less equal to a PSA 9.

When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

Of all of the other grading companies, GAI gets the most respect from me as far as grading accuracy. I found a nice GAI 8.5 graded card, and it looked sharp. It crossed to a PSA 9. But, I have read others on here telling of crossovers a grade lower as well. They seem to be fairly close in consistency to PSA, and their higher graded cards are even doing well on Ebay. It still isn't PSA at the end of the day (which is my preference) so anything I buy in a GAI holder I buy with an eye towards crossing it.

Is this card an ebay auction? if it is would you mind posting a link?

Beauty is in the eye of the reholder. Since all cards within a given PSA class aren't equal, I doubt there's an easy answer to the question you pose.

  • I've got 4 gai cards 9.5's 85 topps Yountand 86 Fleer Brett both are outstanding and won them on ebay for a fraction of what a psa 10 would go for. Also got 87 fleer dr. j 9 that is marked first graded and a nowitzki ultra rookie 9. Both are solid 9's. I would say of my small sample of cards from them they are on par with psa. I also like the secure quality of the gai holder. I'm happy just keeping them in the slab there in.....

That mays looks sweet. Any idea what psa 9's have gone for on this card......

Looks like a nice card, although centering is off just a touch. the picture is just a little too fuzzy to get a good enough idea about the corners...

the only thing that might keep this auction from being a really good deal is the fact that its one of GAI's "first graded" personally i couldn't care less about this designation, but apparently its a big deal to some, so not only will you be competing with the people who are mays collectors, and the '73 set collectors, you will also be going up against those who are out to get all of the "frist graded" cards, for whatever reason.

there is a '73 Mays PSA 9 up for auction too right now, they end 36 minutes apart from each other... the psa is currently going for almost $150 more though. with the GAI picture its just really hard to tell if it has a chance to cross to a PSA 9 since its a little fuzzy, of course, it could also depend on the grader who happens to grade the card.

shagrotn...the centering on the card is within PSA and GAI standards for a 9. It's always hard to tell from a scan the condition of a card, but it looks pretty sharp to me. It looks like a great opportunity to get the card you want and save some money in the process. Good luck. I also have several high end GAI cards that I do not plan on crossing to PSA.

Out of principle, I'd avoid that dealer like the plague....it's (www.neverpayfullprice.com) with a new name.

Ditto the above on this seller.

Here is a link to a thread on another one of his items - unopened tobacco packs.

    "Slabbed" thread

It seems that some may have had a less than positive experience with this seller.

Anyone know about "slabbed", who used to be "buying-machine", who begat "www.neverpayfullprice.com"?

Here are the negs on this seller. None in over a year, but maybe caution is needed.

I have no experience with this person, just passing on info.

I personally just buy PSA graded only. I have have had no luck in my attempts at crossing over Global to PSA (several 7's and two 8's) the expert collectors (which I am not) would have a better eye as far as knowing what would cross and what would not although I believe that it would still be a crap shoot. What are your goals? If you are trying to build a registered set with psa I would stick with PSA, why cause yourself headaches with the hopes of crossing over if it is not a sure thing? If you are collecting just to get nice examples of cards I see nothing wrong with Global. I like their holders although I like to have uniformity with my collection.

This is such B.S. "Avoid the seller like the plague." Give me a break. The guy has had 1004 consecutive positive transactions without a negative. It gets a little old hearing these blanket "do not buy from this seller" posts when maybe 1 or two of you have had a negative experience.

Look at the overall record and trends. If (and I mean IF) this guy had problems in the past, he has certainly cleaned up his act now. Again, 1004 consecutive positive transactions in a year speaks for itself.

Joe Orlando made a statement on the sports card and memorabilia forum about these types of accusations. Maybe it's a blessing in disguise that only "1%" of PSA's customers post on this forum. Otherwise, many an honest seller would unfairly singled out. Don't you guys ever consider the damage you may be doing to someone's livelihood when you make these statements?

You have been around long enough to know that just because he has 1004 positive transactions, does not mean every sale has been a winner. I mean many folks that have bad deals often don't leave negative feedback because they don't want a retaliatory negative. That is the crappy thing about ebay's feedback system.

I take all feedback with a grain of salt and listen to others comments about a seller.

NOTE: I have had no dealings or placed any bids on this seller's items.

Grillo -- yes, I would avoid this seller like the plague and it has nothing to do with the feedback on this account. It would have everything to do with his well documented sales of rather smallish cards in PRO holders. I would also ask, if this guy is on the up and up, why on earth would he have multiple eBAY sales IDs? Wise up grillo, not everything is a jab at GAI.

I agree. It would be fairly easy (I imagine) to have positive feedback placed automatically if using ebay/PayPal checkout and the item is paid for within the specified period of time. This would eliminate retaliatory feedback if the seller does not ship in a timely manner.

As far as the crossover, it is hard to tell from a scan and I have heard from a PSA rep that SGC has a better success than GAI.

I take comments about sellers on this board with a grain of salt and give more credence to the e-bay feedback system. I guess we can agree to disagree on this.

Listen, I don't dismiss the argument that some people are afraid to give negative feedback, but let's face it, in this case your argument holds no water imo...again, we're talking about a guy who has had 1,004 (not 10, 20, or 100) consecutive positive transactions...that is an outstanding record whether or not you feel the e-bay feedback system is flawed. I think 1,000 is quite a large sample--it's too bad some don't agree.

I never thought or said it was.
