Need opinion on this Seated Quarter

This coin has awesome detail but not sure about the nick through the shiled on the reverse?

How much does this affect the grade. Look high AU if not for that nick.

Any opinions?

Ouch. Lucky the shield was there or the eagle would have been sawed in half.

  • That looks like the best nick I have ever seen. It almost looks like it is part of the design of the coin. I have no idea how much it would take off the value.

Between the cleaning and the large nick, it would net EF or perhaps VF. I may be a bit harsh on the coin as I think the nick is really distracting.

Honestly, I'd say thats not a nick, its a gouge.

While it is preferable that it be hidden somewhat by the design elements the way it is as opposed to being plainly visible in the obverse field, to me it is a significant problem and is likely to be a big issue for any future buyer.

I'd vote for a more worn coin without the problem.

If you want this one I'd say to pay 3 full grades less than the detail suggests. I'm not convinced that its cleaned (as someone else suggested), but if it is thats 2.5 strikes.

No matter how nice the coin is, That cut would kill it for me.

Looks like a strong XF, but cleaned. BTW that is not a nick, it is a gouge. A light nick is acceptable and really won't affect the grade on an older circulated coin. Net VF money. From the scan.

I'd rather have a nice VF20 than this coin. Net F15 imo. That's a 2 grade gouge. Coin has been cleaned too.

Arrows and Rays quarters in XF-AU are extrememly common. You should not settle for anything less than a near flawless and uncleaned specimen.

  • If I were buying this I would pay very low vf or F.

I'd pass and find another--there are much nicer ones around than that...
