Where do serious Ebay dealers get their stock?

I was just curious (call me a noob i guess) but where do serious Ebay and other dealers get their stock from? It would be virtually impossible to make any worthwhile profit by reselling on Ebay, what you bought on Ebay. Now if you have a physical retail shop I can understand where you would get your stock. But is it these big coin shows or what? Where do they find coins cheap enough to make any real $$$

80% of mine comes off of online auctions (ironic, ant it). Heritage, Teletrade, Ebay. About 15% comes from online dealers. The remaining 5% comes from shows.

I do not sell much anymore, but when I did, I did buy SOME things off eBay and resold them on eBay and made profits. However, I did not do that too often. You need to know what to look for. Right place-right time sort of thing.

Other than that, most dealers probably by below wholesale from people selling their collections and then the dealer sticks it on eBay.

Just my guess. I am not a dealer, just do this for the love of the hobby.
  • i do it as a hobby too. i have for years and years on an amateur level. just recently i was thinking about trying to make it a second career.

I have to buy mine from retail shops, shows, coin club meetings etc. With increasing fee's its very hard to make a buck, and you have to be very selective, and also have a good idea as to what will sell on the bay and what wont in relation to the price you paid to obtain it. Knowing how to grade coins and having a good eye is extremely helpful when it comes to cherry picking coins from shows and dealer inventory for re-sale on e-bay. Actually thier are quite a few people in this hobby, that frankly cant grade coins worth a darn, however, its a natural tendency to overgrade then undergrade, but sometimes you can still catch a deal on an undergraded coin. The variety seekers can also catch a few goodies as many people dont look at them.

I've had good luck buying on eBay and reselling there... if you can take better pictures than the original auction, you can get more bids image
