Lucky me 1893-s morgan. is it real

Last week I won a lot on ebay about 3lbs of old silver coins and
what do you know the first silver dollar I pull out of the bag is a 1893-s morgan dollar.
So I jumped in my truck and went to the coin shop up the street.
Two guys looked at it and said its not a fake.
one of them said you can tell buy the scratch in the y in liberty because all of them have it.
I myself are still not sure and hope that some of you can take a look at it just to be shure.
Now if I could only remember how to post pictures from inkfrog.

Thanks for your help
Mike.

    Looks good.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • Hi,
Thanks for your help with the pictures.

Mike, the referenced die scratch is actually at the upper portion of the "T" in "LIBERTY", not at the "Y". It is approximately vertical in direction and appears at the top left side of the vertical portion of the "T". There are a few other less obvious die characteristics, as well.

Edited to add: Now that images have been posted, I will say that the date and mintmark look ok, as in genuine, from what I can see.

Now, who says there is no Santa Claus? Nice score!!!!!

  • Looks good to me, although I would want to take a close look at the mintmark and some other diagnostics up close and personal. Also, it appears to be a possible "ex-jewelry" piece based on the rim ticks. It's a very, very good find. Congratulations!!

The coin does look real. Show it to ANACS if they come to a show near you.
    All glory is fleeting.
  • Hi, Thanks for all your help.
I have found some more nice coins.
1892 barbor quarter looks to be au-ms
1914 barbor half dollar could be xf

Looks authentic to me, but it does have damage. I would send that in to ANACS. Even a net AG03 would probably bring in the neighborhood of $1000.
  • Hi $1000.00 Thats GREAT I think I will hold on to this one.

    Was it this auction?

"There was one silver dollar 1893 in its own case, as well as one 1889 dime, and they are included."

I guess you took a chance that the 93 might be a S mint and scored. Nice image

Maybe I should email the seller this thread so they can kick themself in the butt for not bothering to find out what they were selling.

So if they have more coins maybe they will take the time to check out what they are worth next time instead of losing out on hundreds of dollars.
  • Good point.
I think I will email them and let them know
that I am verry happy with the coins and that some
of them were verry nice and worth more then what thay sold for.
I will let them know that if thay are going to sell enymore coins to please spend
some time to try to find out what thay are worth before thay sell them. I will also offer eny help I can.
I just do not want to make them feel like thay are being made fun of.
    Thanks again, Mike
