2000d quarter copper color

Hi gang,

my son brought me a quarter he found on the sidewalk this morning and i thought i would ask you guys and gals something about it. It is a 2000 D quarter massachusetts.

It is all brown like an old penny. i thought it was dirty or coloredfrom being outside. but there are scratches in it and the entire depth of the scratch is the same color. The edges are reeded but there is no color difference on the edges like the normal quarter. The picture i have is not too good. The pretty sharp in the features with the E Plubirus unum being slightly weak in the strike. The color is unifrom throught and not darker or lighter in any place. ther is one scratch on the obverse that is shiny copper color in the bottom of it.

I do not want to try and wipe it or try to get the color off if that is what it is.

Any suggestions?

It could be missing a clad layer... but the picture is too dark to tell image

  • maybe these are better. used a tripod and put them in the window sill.
  • I can't tell from the images but I'll guess and say it's one of two things. It's either a "copper wash" error or it's a quarter that was exposed to some kind of elements outside of the mint that made it turn color.
If it were missing the clad layers it would be thinner then nomral and the strike would be weak. It would also be way underweight.
I'm voting for it being exposed to something outside of the mint ..... sorry.

    I think it's environmental damage.
