New 1969 Set Roars to #2

gemintgemint Posts: 6,101 ✭✭✭✭✭
Anyone know who Dave Cryer is? He came out of nowhere and bolted right up to #2. Dave - If you read these forums, congratulations and welcome to the 1969 club. Looks like you'll be pushing Ron Hobbs for the #1 spot in short order.

I just picked up several dozen 9s to add to my set but I'll still be lagging in the low 8.2's.

I've noticed him there(not at #2) for a while. He has 2 sets on the registry now doesn't he?

  • If I remember correctly, Dave started his set by buying Virtualizard's set. He recently was the winner of Fred Borelli's complete set which was #3 on the registry. He has been winning 9s on ebay the way Stump used to. I expect him to be in the #1 spot before too long and I wouldn't be surprised if his second set breaks into the top 10 also the way he has been upgrading. He's building a very impressive set and I hope he plans to add scans in the future.
  • Dave is vmfa_vet on EBay. A very pleasant guy that swipes all of the great 1964 cards out from under me. At the rate he is going, I expect him to have the best run of 1960's cards on the planet before long (if he doesn't already).

Ah yes. I do recognize that ID. He has won several impressive cards recently. It's good to have a new Dave in the club to replace the two Dave's (Jacobs and Read) who recently broke up their sets.
  • I forgot to mention that Dave Cryer was able to obtain quite a few cards from Dave Read when Dave Read broke up his set.
  • Dave Cryer doesn't just go after 60's cards, I have been battling and losing to him on the 53 Topps front.

He's at about 90% on his 53 set....and he has built it fast.

Good luck on all of our sets Dave!
    Looking for:

    1941 Playball in PSA 8.

Ohhh k , I recognize the ebay id now. He's outbid me many times and on some Yaz items too I believe.
The competition is good but I hate being passed ! image While we're on the subject, who is Grady Mosay? He has been neck & neck with me for a bit now.

  • Dave,

Grady is a great guy who has been building his set very methodically. He reads the boards but doesn't post often.

Thanks Mike, I was just curious as we have been back & forth a bit in the 16 & 17 spots (currently) and further down previously.

Michael is correct. I sold my '69 partial set to Dave in August of last year. I'm glad to see that my set is now up to #2! Thanks Dave! image

BTW, I also sold my 99%+ complete 1970 set to Dave about a week after I sold the '69 set. It was (and still is) the #2 set on the '70 Set Registry, although Dave has done a tremendous amount of upgrading in the past 10 months.

    JEB.
  • Thanks for the kind words Zodiac! I don't post to often, I really enjoy reading the threads. Thanks to people like Mike the attempt at the '69 set has really been exciting and fun so far. Magellan, you'll probably pass me within the next week or so because I'm out of cash for the moment and will be on vacation for a week or so. Dave Cryer's sets are unbelievable. I always wondered if all those cards I lost to vmfa_vet would end up on the registry. I'm glad they did and echo Zodiac's sentiments about scans....

I've sold quite a few cards to Dave Cryer over the past year and he pays very promptly and comes highly recommend for any future transactions. He appears to be on his way as the future #1 '69 Topps baseball set owner on the registry. His big boost on the '69 registry as I recall is that he won a complete graded set on eBay about a month ago that had a GPA of around 7.8 or 7.9 and appears to be upgrading it at a very brisk pace.

I just sent 460 different 1969's from the set I won in the Mastro auction. I just couldnt believe how sharp the set was. There were about 150 OC's but the rest were exceptional. In fact the OC's were stunning. Some of the cards that are Pop 0 in 9 or Pop 1 in 9 might have company soon. I cant wait to get the grades back in the next 3 weeks. Once there back it should move my set into the 95% to 98% complete. If I get the grades I hope for, the set will GPA at 8.70 to 8.80. I just cant wait to get them back. I almost considered paying the extra $2 per card to get them back in 2 weeks.
  • Best of Luck to Dave Cryer. No nonsense, outstanding collector; supportor of our hobby.
Bought mt partial 66' set about 6 months back. Has an outstanding collection. Dave is a heck of a nice guy as well. Great having him in the fold as a part of the 69' family.

Never met a Vintage card I didn't like!
  • Hey John,

Looks like you're going to have to change the title of this thread. Dave Cryer's set just took over first place. From what I understand, he has a bunch of 9's on the way as well so we can expect further increases to his GPA in the near future.

Uh, Dave Cryer? Yeah, I've heard of him before...imageimage

Used to working on HOF SS Baseballs--Now just '67 Sox Stickers and anything Boston related.
  • Congratulations to Dave Cryer-- From a look at his recent purchases on EBAY alone, better watch out for 1963, 1964, 1965, 1968 TOPPS and 1953 TOPPS as well as the 1969 TOPPS set. A few stats show that Dave has spent $26,591 on the EBAY alone for 1969 TOPPS cards from 5/29 to 6/20 (3 weeks) in addition to his many other TOPPS cards won on EBAY. In addition to his purchase of the 1969 TOPPS #3 F.Borelli set for $20,000, he has won 7 PSA10's @$245.80/card, 40 PSA9's @$109.19/card, 9 PSA8's @$47.39/card, and 1 PSA7 WL @$76.01. When I see the high bidder as vmfa_vet I am afraid to compete. He's tough and I commend him for his tenacity. Ron Hobbs EX #1B (EX #1A is still Dave Jacobs- Stump17)

    Hi guys,
There should be some nice 7's & 8's that are not needed in these hi grade sets that are moving up the registry. I'd give them a nice home.

The recent market has shown how broad the collecting base is for the 1969 set. Despite the fact that three of the top sets have been sold off in the past six months, the prices have remained relatively strong. It seems like there are always more people waiting in the wings to take over when a set gets broken up. I'm sure there would be more complete sets if it were only possible. The fact is many of the cards still have very low populations making it extremely difficult to assemble a complete set with a >8.00 GPA.
  • I still hace a goal for a complete BASIC 1969 TOPPS set with ALL cards PSA8 or better. Still need 3 more to complete. Any help is appreciated.

My next goal is the MASTER set in PSA8 or better. I still need 1 var and 12 WL's. Again, any help would be very welcomed.

  • The three cards that Ron needs in PSA 8 are:

    #78 Tom Satriano
    #110 Mike Shannon
    #620 Dean Chance

I hope someone can help you Ron.
