Bill: Yes, of course, the depth of deep cameo can vary on every grade, including PR70DCAM. But, I seldom have a large enough pool of coins in the PR70DCAM grade to separate out any significant differences from date to date. Every now and then I come across a "monster PR70DCAM" specimen and I usually set them aside for my customers who specialize in that particular series. For example, I recently came across a killer Clad Kennedy PR70DCAM with sensational frost for a Clad Kennedy and mega-perfect surfaces. When I had lunch last week with perhaps the most dedicated PCGS-PR70DCAM PROOF KENNEDY collector in the world, I brought the coin with me to give to him so he could take it home and compare it to other Kennedys in the collection and that particular date. And, of course, when he got back home, he compared it to the coin in his collection already in that slot and, let's just say, the coin I selected was "a keeper".

For those newer to the hobby, keep in mind, the "DCAM" portion of the grade is merely the designation portion - naturally, with all designations there can be better coins than others within the designation standard (e.g. FS nickels with better steps than others, FH SLQ's with stronger FH than others, FB Roosies with sharper bands than others, etc). Hence, if a collector is ultra passionate about his collection, he can actually "upgrade" (i.e. the desigantion) even within the PR70DCAM grade (or whatever the finest known grade may happen to be) over a long period of time.

  • I would like to confirm 110% Mitch's position.

He really found some Super-70DCAM coins. If that not receive a special denomination as "star" or "super-cameo" is just because these denominations do not exist.

His coins are really over than the normal PR70DCAM grade. It deserves the title of "The perfection".

Not counting here the pleasure to lunch with him and had a fantastic conversation about wines, cigars and for sure coins besides the opportunity to see others jewels that he showed. image

    Edson: Thanks.

I think you would agree that, overall, the PR70DCAM Kennedy Half Dollars coming out of PCGS this past year or two have been sensational coins. Whatever "checks and balances" were put in place to ensure problem-free PR70DCAM coins has really been working.

Every now and then I get in what is likely one of the "first strike" monster DCAM specimens of a coin in a PR70DCAM holder. To the trained eye, they really stand out. I am happy to place these coins with the collectors I routinely work with in each series, usually at very little premium. Yes, if PCGS ever went to a * or special designation for the monster DCAM moderns, I have little doubt these "first strike" coins would become more highly desireable. But, quite frankly, I do not believe that is going to happen anytime soon. So, for now, it is just fun to gobble them up and use them to assist in the building of world class sets. image
