Funny Color on 1940 Cent

I was looking through a roll of mixed date wheat cents today and this 1940 caught my eye. It is a different color than any of the the other coins. It is almost a brassy color instead of the normal red, brown tones. Here are some pictures that may help you tell me if this is a proof coin or just a normal coin or whatever. It's probably just a run of the mill 1940 cent but it sure caught my eye as being different. The pictures don't really show the true color of the coin but maybe someone has some ideas.

Looks cleaned to me- note the areas of undisturbed toning around the letters on the reverse (?)

I agree with you. I didn't pay much attention to that at first because the color caught my eye.

I agree. When I was a young collector of about 10 yrs old I cleaned a few wheaties with Softscrub and that's the color they turned out.

Cleaning, probably an old one. Usually acetone, if used to death, will cause similar effects, including the color. Blue Ribbon can also do about the same thing. If the coin appears to be somewhat oily, the latter would be my choice as to what happened.

Yep.....reminds me of some of the eraser jobs I did back in the late 70's...
