LIMIT USE OF REGISTERED MAIL

SteveSteve Posts: 3,312 ✭✭✭
I just sent a package to PCGS using Priority Mail, Insurance and Delivery confirmation. From the east coast, I expect PCGS will receive the coins in three days. If I sent the package registered mail, it would take about a week. This brings up a question in my mind as to when to use registered mail when shipping to PCGS or another grading service. I have always felt that since I insure the package for its value (ie) cost to me, that the only times I need to have it registered is if the coins I am shipping are rare or difficult to replace easily in the marketplace. With regard to the Lincoln cents I collect, I would use registered mail if I were sending an MS65 1914D or a PR68 1990 no S proof, but I rather speed the process by using priority mail when sending most of my easily replaceable coins. What do you do? Steveimage

I use express or priority. None of my coins are ones that can't be replaced within a reasonable period of time.
So far none have been lost.

I use Priority with Delivery Confirmation but have yet to ship a coin of real value that needed Registered Mail.

I also use priority with insurance and delivery confirmation. Be sure though that if you do use insurance rather than registered, you have reciepts or at the very least good photographs of the contents as well as a good price guide and your copy of the grading invoice...if for some reason you do need to collect on the insurance they will need proof of value....also there was something about them not insuring coins? I'm not sure if that's true though.

I use First Class or Priority with insurance for most stuff, but I use Registered if the coins are worth over $500 or so.

Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

Over a $1,000 I use registered- so this means all my coin submissions go registered. mike

There comes a point where registered is cheaper than priority when you take the insurance charges into account. I'm not sure what that declared dollar breakpoint is, though.

Ditto. At around $500 or so, it becomes cheaper to use Registered.

I guess I'd be tempted if I didn't think my coins would be difficult to replace. My last submission was $19K and that's just a little to much for Priority Mail.

I agree with LM and Russ. I use Registerd mail if the value of the coin(s) is above 500.

Registered above $500 or for cool coins that I don't want lost, no matter what.

I use Priority or Express most often, then First Class on smaller packages. Insurance and Delivery Confirmation varies case-by-case.

TIP: on expensive coins (or whenever feasible), use a decent size box (il.e. 8X5X2) instead of a bubble envelope. Boxes are more difficult to smuggle out of the post office and less likely to get damaged in postal equipment.

Don't ship much, but I see no need for Priority. I doubt it makes 1 days difference since we have good USPS service.

Never lost a coin yet (fingers crossed), but I prefer Registered Mail because of the security for high value stuff. Not a dollar limit, a replacement limit for me.

Anyone use registered WITH Insurance or do you think it is not necessary? That is what the PO told me anyway....

Anyone know the procedure IF a package gets lost and it has been insured regardless of whether it was registered?

It doesn't. First Class gets there just as fast as Priority. However, above a certain weight one moves in to a choice between Parcel Post and Priority. Then Priority is faster.

I always add the insurance. With Registered, it's a screaming bargain. Far cheaper than the $1 per $100 charged for First Class or Priority.

The odds are extremely unlikely that a package will be lost, but then again, that's what insurance is for. If your package goes bye-bye, you're still screwed.

Thanks for the input. It seems like if you have expensive coin shipments (over $500) it is cheaper to send them registered. I guess the USPS figures it costs them as much in detail tracking a $100 registered item as it costs them to track a $10,000 registered item. Steveimage

I always use insurance with Registered. In the unlikely event it's lost, all they are going to do is say sorry and tell you that you shouldn't have insured it. The cost of insurance above the $7.50 Registered fee is pretty small.
