1959 Franklin Proof in PCGSDCAM. Anyone seen one?

If so can you tell me about the die pairs. Are they ultimate on both sides? Does one side have more or less contrast than the other side? Thanks.

There are probably about 20-30 pieces. Coins with some cameo are pretty common, but the quality stinks. Most of these coins grade in the 63-65 range. To answer your question directly, I've only seen one, and it was obviously from the first die pair. It was heavy on both sides with great mirrors. It was also hairlined to death. Rick Tomaska put the population in 65+ at 10 pieces. This was the first year of production since 42, and the mint did a pretty lousy job. Lots of the coins were actually struck with worn dies. If you look at the PCGS pop report, I think there are 6 or 7 in Dcam, and only one in higher grade. Happy hunting.

You're missing a few years, Don.

I saw one in an NGC holder at last year's PNNA. I can't remember if it was PR65 or PR66, but I do remember that I thought the obverse was monster, and the reverse a bit short of the UCAM designation.

Thanks Russ. What I have found is one like you describe. I have not even cut it out of the cello yet and the obverse blows you away. A deep black and white with snow white devices. The reverse however is much lighter, for sure cam but not the deep black and white needed for a DCAM at PCGS. However the coin is without haze, spotting of any kind or toning and has booming luster, even inside the package. Im well satisfied already.

I have seen several. I held the 69dcam in my hand and had the opportunity to buy it for less than $10k. But it didn't look 'right' to me - it had the contrast, but the frost had a greyish tint to it - the frost doesn't look like any other dcam Franklin I have seen - some believe this coin is not genuine. In fact, both sides were evenly contrasted. I have also seen one of the 67dcams, also with dcam contrast on both sides, but the price didn't justify the gain in contrast over my super 7cam.

I also own one of the NGC 65 ultras - have had it for years - when I got it it was one of only two ultras. This coins shows ultra contrast on both sides but several milk spots knock the grade down a couple of points.

All in all, this date is super tough to find nice - if the mismatched dies don't get you, the milk spots will.
