How much gold was on the SS Central America?

The show on the History Channel said there were 21 tons of gold on the ship. An article on the PCGS site says three tons.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • Take a look at this web site: SS Central America

I just glanced through the site, but they mention that "the Central America also held tons of gold ingots, coins, nuggets, and dust."

The tonnage that PCGS may be talking about might simply be in regards to the coins, not the additional ingots, nuggets, and dust.

The three tons were the main shipment of government(?) gold which was specificly listed on the manifest. The rest was gold being brought back or shipped by private citizens which was most likely listed as personal property. It is kind of like the old spanish treasure ships, a lot of undeclared treasure was also brought on board.
