Go for it Mikey!!! Are you trying to go yard? >>

Ummm, no. Saw it start at $9.99, put in a bid then and was just intrigued to see what these go for these days.
I seem to remember spending hours of my life last summer scrolling through posts with confirmed serial number breakages and arguments on why this set will stand the test of time but none other out currently or soon to come will.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Well, I agree with you about modern but I think years from now this set will stand the test of time. Sure the price of the set is down now but let's see what some 8 year olds who grow up 30 years from now and have money to burn think of these sets then. The set's are beautiful and I do think the breaking up of thse sets will be a factor. Hindsight is 20-20. Haven't posted a broken up set here recently since I haven't seen one in months. Still track them though.

I think a key overlooked factor here is that, by the time those 8 year olds turn 38, there will be about 1,523 more "super rare and collectible" sets for them to choose from, so that this set won't stand out in a special way the way it might now. Upper Deck in particular has no problem pumping out high-end sets ... how will this one fare when the 2005 Yankees Exquisite Collection comes out? Or the 2010 Yankees 24K Gold Special Edition? Just my two cents ...

I'm saving my money until UD releases the Yankees Exquisite Baseball History Museum at $2,500 per pack.

Perhaps the UD Red Sox Exquisite will even include serial-numbered Ted Williams cryogenic DNA samples.

If the Sox ever win a World Series, I'd bet dollar to donuts UD comes out with a showstopper of a set that would rival the Yankees one. Then again, if they ever made a Phillies Master Collection with a crazy price tag, I'd probably take the plunge, so who am I to talk ...

koby, I saw that set sell on eBay but it's not on my list since they never broke up the set.

It will stand out in several ways but I will highlight two:

    (1) It was the first set of it's kind just like the Griffey rookie debuted in UD's inaugural set.

    (2) There will be an "aura" about the set since it was made in 2000, the turn of the century, and the Yanks won the Subway Series agianst the Mets during that year.

I think the Griffey analogy is right on - unfortunately, it suggests that the value will continue to slowly decline over time. Jr's about to hit HR #500, and his UD rookie is nowhere near the high prices it used to command. I think like with most modern cards, it's just a matter of time before interest and value fade. Likewise, I'm not so sure how "memorable" the Subway Series will be in fans' minds 30 years from now. It was a 5-game series that really wasn't very close or interesting in retrospect - really, it was more intriguing for non-baseball reasons ...

Again, just one person's opinion, but I think those sets were just priced too high out of the gate, and now buyers-turned-sellers are realized modest losses ... I don't see that trend reversing in a significant way at any point in the future.

What was retail on the master sets when they first came out?
  • joker73joker73 Posts: 497
I think $5,000 - but I'm sure Gemmy would know for certain ...

edited to add: from one of his old posts:

<< <i>The Upper Deck Suggested Retail price is $6000.00 >>

  • so let me get this straight, the set that "will stand the test of time" is selling for less than 1/3rd of its initial release price?

The wooden box that the set comes in is very nice.

Actually, I'm pretty sure it's the Exquisite LeBron/Kobe 1/1 logo card selling for over $60k that will stand the test of time image.

So it dropped even under the $3,000 price it was at a while ago. Wow kind of surprised this modern created scarcity with
Yankee greats has gone down. I would of thought it could of hung on. I'm sure with the fact no other collectible of this
type will be created in the next few years will cause the demand for this product to reach unlimited proportions. And like
Koby says there is even a nice box.

I'm hoping for a 1 of 1 Larry Brown Kansas suit patch with Detroit suit patch and his brother's sock card comes out.
Being the only coach to win both a college championship and NBA title this card has the chance of being worth gagillions!

Imagine a Larry Brown quadruple patch card....

NBA suit, ABA suit, NCAA suit.......and after the summer the Olympic gold suit!!!

    ...and his wife is hot!!!

I think the Yankees sets are very nice. Maybe not for $6000, but definitely a nice collectible to have if the price goes down a little bit more.

Sorry a bit OT, but did you see what else that seller has? A $5,000 bill up for auction!
