Grade story

So, for the overall experience, I have been submiting the same coins to PCGS and NGC in hopes of finding out some information. Here is what I found out.

Coin #1
Originally 1917-S type1 25c PCGS MS63 in first generation holder. I thought it had a shot at MS65 so i cracked it and sent it to PCGS
RESULT: PCGS MS64. Knowing that NGC is more liberal with these coins, I cracked it and sent it to NGC
RESULT: body bad. Artifically Toned. good deal

Coin #2
Originally 1923-D $20 PCGS MS63 in first generation holder. A really cool coin that when struck probably had grease on the die, so is now imprinted with it. Thought it would 64, so i cracked it.
RESULT: body bag. surface damage. right. the imprint is as as-struck as can be. Obviously unacceptable so I sent to NGC.
RESULT: MS63. I still disagree, but at least they where somewhat consistent when they graded it.

Coin #3
Originally 1911-D $20 NGC MS65. I thought it may have a shot at MS66, so I cracked it and sent it to PCGS.
RESULT: MS63. Literally the nicest 63 I have ever seen. It didn't last, I cracked it and let NGC take another stab.
RESULT: MS65. Once again, I can't really argue with consistency.

In the end, it is easy to see that they were all across the map, not really being able to provide the same opinion between services. And as for the Standing Lib., she will be headed back in to one of the two. We shall see what happens.

Interesting, though it begs the question "why?".

  • i believe it is interesting. plus, if i am right, the coin values magically increase.
  • Interesting. Thanks for sharing. If had the funds to submit to different services and re-submit ect. I'd do it and have a fun time doing so. I'm not cheap, I'm just poor image

The 1911-D $20 comes with a flat luster and sometimes I think the grading companies forget this when assigning a grade. mike

It seems to me that you are doing little more than wasting money.
    All glory is fleeting.
  • The sad truth here is that you are among many that are doing the same thing and incorrectly changing the counts on uncirculated coinage at PCGS and NGC.

I posted a question concerning this issue on this weeks Q & A forum, but alas it was not answered.

Which is pretty much the way it is. They are pretty much the same.

Suggestion: Don't waste anymore money with those guys, save it for buying coins. image
